'American Idol': Here's an idea: Cancel it. | EW.com

excerpt:"With the news that Ellen DeGeneres is leaving American Idol close on the heels of Simon Cowell, the conversation surrounding the show is all about who'll replace who, and when. I have an alternative idea: Why not just cancel American Idol, since it's looking more and more as though it's going to be a hollow shell of its hollow shell?

Oh, I know, that's not really going to happen — the show is still too popular, despite its dipping ratings — but it's something to consider. The speculation that Jennifer Lopez might become the next judge probably won't solve the problem Ellen articulated, which was that she (and, I'd say by extension, any well-established celebrity) tends to be reluctant to criticize a contestant with the same sharpness that a, y'know, real music critic might.

Scott -

To me it is always great to see these people in the beginning stages going before national television .. thinking they can sing.. a few of them always giving me a few laughs... but after all is said and done.. it kind of wears on a person... They should drop the show...

Absolutely. They "jumped the shark" when Ellen joined the cast.

I lost faith in television when ABC canceled Pushing Daisies. It would be nice to see a couple of reality tv shows get canceled, but it will never happen. There are other shows that deserve to be canceled far more than American Idol. I suggest the ones where douche-bags/skanks try to find their "one true love" and are disappointed when the relationship ends one week after the finale.

I'm still surprised American Idol is popular considering none of their contestants have any real talent. They're all practically clones of each other. Not even Ellen could make that show bearable (though I didn't even attempt to watch it during her stint on the show).

I think some of the contestants had talent - i liked the one who came in second place

They can sing well, but they really have nothing to offer beyond that. I remember when there was so much hoopla about Adam Lambert and the other guy. I heard them sing and I just didn't feel anything. I could have subconsciously forced myself from enjoying it, but I highly doubt it. :/
