Interesting perspective on autism

On vacation in Cape Cod last week, I decided to take a bike ride into the next town. As I gathered my helmet, phone and water bottle, I saw that my adult son, Nat, was watching me. I knew he'd come along for the ride if I asked him, but I hesitated.
Nat has fairly severe autism. Like so many of his skills, his bicycling ability is erratic. He knows how to brake, but he does not know how to shift gears. He obeys traffic signals but is foggy about the more subtle, human signals. Or he seems foggy — I have never been able to test that definitively. But then, how do you test something that could endanger him or others? Hang back and see if he stops and looks both ways at a small side street with no stoplight? What about the other bikers, families and dogs along the way, all of whom he'd have to navigate carefully? How do you catch someone before he hurts himself if you're also on a bike?
The answer is: You don't. I know; I've tried

Again Scott, thank you. Would you happen to know where I can look to find information on autistic parents raising autistic kids, with an emphasis on Asperger's?
I've been doing great with my kids, but I would like to see what other Aspies are doing, and I just have not been able to find it.

hi! i have a son on the spectrum and my husband is undiagnosed, but likely Aspberger's. So far, I haven't found many useful resources other than the local autism society. I know there are autism groups within newsvine as well.

Gretchen, thank you.
My son was diagnosed with asperger's a year ago, and with his diagnosis, came mine. I thought he was normal because I had done the same thing when I was a kid. I had a psr worker for him, and she suggested that I look into having him tested for aspergers. So I did, and wow what a difference it makes to have the correct therapy.
I have 2 other kids who are normal, and all of us have adhd. What a combo!
The reason I ask about parents with autism, is to see how they cope with the stress of having kids. :)

there are some articles, doug and I wrote on both autism and aspergers. they are posted in those groups as well as our own articles. Doug has Aspergers, and I have raised an autistic son, who is a fine young man today. He still has a few problems, for instance, one has to be very specific in how they want a chore done. He even helped me hang curtains yesterday, even though it was hot and humid. We don't have air-conditioning, as Sears, after 2 years, Still hasn't fixed the furnace/central air they put in.
