Helicopter parents Have Neurotic Kids, Study Suggests

excerpt:"verly protective parents might be leaving a lasting impact on their child's personality, and not in a good way, a new study finds.

The results show having so-called "helicopter parents" was associated with being dependent, neurotic and less open, a slew of personality traits that are generally thought of as undesirable.

The study, which surveyed college freshman, is one of the first to try to define exactly what helicopter parenting is, and measure it. The term was originally coined by college admissions personnel when they started to notice a change in parents of prospective students — parents would call the admissions office and try to intervene in a process that had previously just been between the student and the college, said study researcher Neil Montgomery, a psychologist at Keene State College in N.H.

I'd be lying if I said I was surprised by this finding.

I work at a college in the tuition billing office. It's amazing that some of the students that come here have even learned to tie their own shoes.

Besides handicapping their children by not allowing them to learn to do things for themselves, they hamstring the personnel in our office. Helicopter parents tend to make simple transactions take twice as long. We actually have students come up to the counter with their cell phones in hand. They try to hand-off the phone to us, saying "can you talk to my mom?" This is even for basic transactions like paying for a campus parking citation.

    I'm assuming that you refuse.

You are correct. We don't do phone calls at the counter. If mom wants to talk to someone, she can call into our phone bank that is available to answer questions. The front counter is for transactions...emphasis on "action" in the word transaction.

As a potential hovering parent myself, I sometimes wonder if I am doing too much.
