Newsvine Mentors Are Standing By To Answer Your Questions/Deal With Your Needs (2010 Edition)

News Type: Opinion — Fri Jun 12, 2009 6:36 PM EDT
technology, meta, mentors
By Scott (Scoop) Butki
advertisement

I thought I'd start a sequel to my prior article here since that one got old.

This piece is for people with questions about the site, be it navigation, how best to go about choosing topics, friends, etc.

You may want to peruse the prior piece first to see if the question was asked or answered there but odds are good if you post a Newsvine related question here someone will answer it.

Three suggestions:
1) If you are new to the site I'd suggest introducing yourself. I have an introductions article but since it's gotten quite long I might start a new one of those too. If so I'll amend this link.

Update - the new introductions topic is here

2) Read and comment on other people's stuff. You can be the best writer in the world but if you don't have friends or comment on other people's stuff we may never discover you. Also avoid overuse of the word stuff as some might think you are unable to think of other words besides stuff and things.

3) Don't sweat the meta stuff. There's a lot of meta stuff going on at present but while it's important don't let it affect your overall interest and enjoyment of this site. To paraphrase a slogan,
Newsvine IS What you make it."

99 people may come here for 55 different reasons but provided they follow the Code of Honor that's ok.

Hi Scott - I'm fairly new here (but I've got some great friends already). I just clicked on the intro link and it < gulp > has 515 comments spread over 6 pages and dates back to October 2007. In message board years, that's almost prehistoric. I will go back and read through it, but please consider this an official request for an updated introductory thread. (I hate to get interested in exciting new people only to discover after we've met that they moved on last year to another community and haven't been around since.)

Thanks!

Hi, I'm new...newer than it says actually...

I answered a question a long time ago about grammar perfectionists. It was a one time thing, thus my name. I'm not really a grammar-phobe. But I do get irritated when I see others flamed for their spelling and/or grammar. I pretty much hate seeing people get flamed for anything.

Months passed and somehow I found myself here again. This time I stayed longer than just answering the question.

So, hello and nice to meet everyone. My name is Terrie, I'm 45 and live in California with my husband of 28 years and my two grandkids who I have legal custody of. They are 6 & 3 and have been with us their whole lives. So they're MINE, MINE, MINE!

I'm in North LA County in the Acton/Agua Dulce area. We do granite, so if you've ever bought granite, you might know me. Or, if you have ever eaten at a woodsy Italian Restaurant in the Angeles National Forest, you might know me. Haha. I'm very rarely ever there though. I know the regulars, have said hi to others..and send about 200 people email when they ask me to about wine tasting and etc....It's amazing how many people know me from my emails..

But it's definitely possible, I suppose.

On further perusal , I don't want to

I did that. I joined one that was supposed to be about American History. Well, it wasn't. And in fact seemed to be more about current politics and bashing anyone who was of a different opinion. After a quick perusal of their articles and seeing one guy get bashed to high heaven, I left!

I don't think you can stop your request, but once it's been accepted just go back to the group and click Leave Group.

Great question. I myself have membership pending in some groups - i'm not sure if there is an easy way to cancel pending requests.

Can someone more knowledgeable answer that one? Part of the problem is some of the people who started some of the group are no longer at newsvine so things get tricky in that while others may do some duties in their absence it can be longer before one is officially accepted or rejected.

Hi Scott, this is a good idea thanks for doing an updated article.

As far as I know at this time there is no way to remove your request to join a group. I too have requests that have been there for years! Staff has alluded to fixing this but as of yet has not.

Scott----So glad to find this thread! I've been pending months for the Newsvine Help Group. I emailed Calvin Tang from the top of the list -- he emailed back he couldn't help, to contact the person at the top of the list (??) Then I found a name Aine who owns the group? Emailed her weeks ago. No response.

Frankly, I'm no longer interested, I just want the pending request to go away. Any help for this one?

Scott----Thanx. Next question. What do we do with a Watchlist except build it up? What are those numbers that appear after the names, and how do you access whatever it is? If it's another form of tracking, is it redundant to have Friends and Groups on the Watchlist since the Conversation Tracker already picks them up?

The first number tracks the number of comments in response to articles you wrote or seeded. The second is tracking the number of comments in response to articles or seeds you commented on.

Those are the two I suggest keeping an eye on so you dont miss out on conversations you participated on.

The third lists articles by people you designated to be on your watch list. I usually ignore that one - its a decent way to keep track of what friends are writing but i've found better ways, i.e. through checking on groups or having newsvine email you when certain authors write something new.

I think there is some confusion of what the watch list is for. I'm talking about the one on the left side of the screen, not the actual WL page. I've heard people say that rather than invite someone to be a friend, they will put the person on the watch list. They don't realize that it is not a conversation tracker but the number of articles and seeds the person has written since being placed on watch. So unless they are checking the persons writing, they will know nothing more than before adding to the WL.

I wait till someone asks me to be friends then check out their page, or wait until I am familiar enough with their characture to ask them.

Mule----Thanx for clearing that up. Yes, I was asking about the Watchlist on the left side of the page. I use the Conversation Tracker at the top quite extensively -- that's how this seed came to me!

So you're saying it is no more than a "counter" or tally sheet? Why would I need to know how much someone else is contributing -- enough, that is, for the Newsvine page designers to dedicate the left side of the page, as well as prompt me with the choice under each avatar? I thought I was missing something.

Scott----Again about the Conversation Tracker at the top of the page. Regarding the bottom number, the one adding about 200-300 per day for me. I thought it was generated by comments made by those on my Friends list. You said above it was generated by comments made by those on my Watchlist. Which is it?

And what is a Watchlist Page that Mule mentioned?

      Hi Scott,

I am new here I have to say I have learned plenty from other very kind Mentors/Viners I have written questions about Newsvine and a little article... Dennis and Ben (the Vet) and schnoo have been a great deal of help to me with other Viners as well. I know so much more now and I practice just using the P.C. itself has been a conquest. I once had been in a job that did not require to much in P.C. skills but Newsvine has made me so much better I cannot believe it.

I feel that learning is reading and hands on along with someone else to help you along works quite well. I will take a look at the links you provided in #2 and your article. If Ben and schnoo are not Mentors at the time than I highly recommend them both!

Aimee~~~ please to other viners out there my current name is Froggers but I have felt that I just want to be called by name.

I do some regular writing exercises via this group and participating (which usually also includes giving positive feedback to others and receiving it in kind) seems to be a good way to become part of the community. Sometimes all I need to give is a "please consider turning that into a full story" to let someone flourish as they realize they're interesitng in their thoughts.

      Thanks for this Summer Edition.

Funny thing happened -- I made an error on my lead comment to a post and timed-out on the editor, so I deleted the comment with the result that I received a warning e-mail (fast as can be) from *newsvinehelp.* A similar mix-up on another deletion -- hit the wrong button -- that makes two. I answered the e-mails but heard no more about it. Don't want a bad rep so early in the game -- is it "three strikes your out?"

      Dear Scott (Scoop) Butki,

A comment of yours has been removed by the author of the post or seed it was written on. Authors are expected to be the moderators of the content contained in their own columns and are charged with keeping comment threads on-topic and free from offensive or otherwise inappropriate comments.

If so that's automated and happens every time a comment is deleted and it doesnt mean you're in trouble or anything.

I actually kind of like that you are sent copies of deleted comments because then you can use that to try to rewrite it. Did you know that you can restore comments that were deleted (accidently) in your own column?

      By all means.

And I should mention that when you first arrive at Newsvine you are in the greenhouse and are unable, if memory serves, to post a link.

One tip for all that I find useful when dealing with larger articles, especially those on your column which you are moderating, is to vote for a comment not just because you find it of value (which is why we vote for things) but it also helps me personally keep track of which comments I have and havent read. This becomes quite important when you have discussions that go over 300 or so comments.

Name changes have to be made via staff and I think the current protocol is you have to change it within your first few months. There was a time soon after I arrived (about 18 months ago) when a bunch of people were changing their name and staff (meaning, at the time, Calvin) lay down the law: no more name changes for long-standing members.

too! What a summer you have had so far. It's gotta get better - I mean it can't go anywhere but up at this point for you.

        Thanks.

I figure the next logical twist will be I'll get a job at a place that deals with stolen car stereos and computers.

Okay, hypothetical, a viner posts a kind of ongoing series of articles about what's going on in her life as a bi-polar person/wife/mother. She posts to specific groups and all of NV and is getting dogged by someone saying it shouldn't be meta. Would this be a problem and why?

Sounds to me like it is indeed not meta. There are a lot of things sent to meta group or tagged as meta that are not truly meta.

        Email me if that'll help.

A series like that would only be meta if the author's focus was more about how the site has impacted her - if it's strictly memoirish or personal narrative it would not be meta. For example look at my memoir pieces about anxiety, depression, good news stories, etc - none of those were meta nor should they have been. However, if I wrote a piece on my two year anniversary at newsvine or why I think the site needs to hire more moderators THAT would be meta.

        Hope that helps

green head usually just means they couldn't process your photo upload. not sure why it didnt work but those times i've had a greenhead it meant i wasnt able to upload something.

as for why its not uploading.. that one i'll need to ask for someone else to chime in to answer.

meanwhile, remember, it isn't being green.

Time to revive this for a new good question, which was originally asked at Robert's article here at the bottom of the discussion

                  dragon woman asked:

                  DragonWoman

I have a couple questions, or maybe a request.

Recently, I have had a person come on my article with a comment that would lead me as well as others that the person was a teenager. The article was not put out to the entire Newsvine. I specifically wanted a group that could be closed off to a sensitive audience, and believed I had done so. It is true that I posted to other groups... but not all of Newsvine.

The individual claimed to have located the article by just "looked for articles on sex".

                  1st Question????

Is there a way to prevent articles from being viewed by a general audience? Not just the comments, I get that you can post comments to a specific group conversation.

The next issue is that there is a suspicion that this was an imposter. Someone who may be an existing user, with another name, and assumed another name to create an unnecessary situation.

                  Question 2:

Can this person be discovered even after the site has been closed?

                  I responded:

i'd suggest you email tyler if you haven't already. i'm not sure if theres an age requirement.

you can post an article privately to one particular group.

did your article have a sex tag?

mind if i repost your question - or you repost the question - over here, where some mentors can also answer it?

No go ahead. It was something I thought about when an argument broke out. The discussion we are having is for the most part sexual in nature "Psst. Let's talk about sex". Bit it is pretty tame as far as explicit goes. It is just an honest discussion. Then suddenly, I get someone on there who discribed herself as a teenager whose parent will not talk to her.

There was some suspicion, because the person just got on Newsvine, and was gone within 2 days, after a few on the site spoke out on their suspicions.

It does bare discussion, because there are groups in erotica and they should not curb their thoughts, discussions, art, writings, etc.

Could a parent come after Newsvine?

Thank Scott for your comment and attention on this matter.

I did some research on this subject because I have been in a situation where I was sued by a nut. Although the nut lost the case, I had to spend $15,000 on lawyers to defend myself, none of which was recovered. The emotional trauma is something I will deal with forever.

In our society, anyone can sue anybody for anything. ISP (your internet provider) can be subpoenaed to provide your name, address and any other data they have available. While I think these conversations are totally harmless, there are many super religious people out there who live for confrontations. I would be very leery of sharing sex information with anyone I suspected was underage on a public forum. Newsvine, itself can be subpoenaed and forced to hand over its records.

All it takes is one crazy with a lawyer (or worse yet some group behind them) to damage you financially, and destroy your reputation.

No I am not looking for law suits.

I have been concerned that someone might come after Newsvine or someone on Newsvine, because their child accesses an adult discussion.

I am someone who believes in adult responsibility, but I do sympathise that, Newsvine could be accessed anywhere... school, library.. etc.

I believe the other situation (imposter) may be resolved,I am annoyed by the rash of imposters on here.

Imposters should be brought before a court of their peers (us), and forced to confess their crimes against us. Unfortunately, all we can do is look out for each other the best we can.

My position is that we come on here for fun, stress relief not for somebody's drama. If I want "enemies," I have enough sense to pick my own. I don't want to see anybody who might not be as computer oriented as I am get in any kind of trouble. That is my whole, entire stake in this thing. Period.

I was just asked a question that's easier to answer than one might think - namely if you have already published some articles and you want to also publish them to other groups what is the best way to do so?

There are two ways - one is by clipping articles to a group and one is publishing it to a group.

For clipping you look at the top of your article or seed and in between email this and ! is a clip button which you hit and scroll down until you get to the group you want to clip it to.

The easier way, when you're dealing with your own stuff versus someone else's, is to edit your piece and when you see the menu asking what groups you want to publish it to you check off more boxes than you originally checked.

                  Hope that helps.

Thanks, I am not sure, I know that you can search for stuff by going to the top and just searching by user name, subject, or title... You get a list, and then you can see the article.

If you are on an article with a lot of posts, while you are posting others are posting behind you. You will not see them on your tracker. Every time you post a comment it refreshes the page and the new comments come up but you aren't aware unless you go back to the beginning. It's impossible to keep up. For me it's really bad because I have to think carefully before typing, I type slow, and have a slow PC and dial up. By the time I post a response, there are 6 comments between me and what I was responding to.

This is a good reason to address your comments to the person you are responding to. If you are talking to me but other comments get between us, yours could be taken the wrong way.

I have a question or (suggestion.)

Does the NewsVine comity reward members for good behavior at the end of the year? You know, give them some kind of honor or recognition; I believe this incentive could reduce stroll and bring members to interact between them more respectfully. Have you thought of that?

I've had this come up more than a few times when asking someone for the source of their information. Often the response is "Google it! That's what I did." That's new person speak for "I don't know how." So here is my best explanation of how to link an article:

When you're on the article, go to the address bar and right click, on the drop down menu left click copy. Come back to your open comment (or open a comment) and I usually type the word source then highlight it. Above the comment box there is a chain link for adding a link and the next is broken for breaking the link. Click the solid chain link and a box will appear. On the top line right click and paste the address of the article. Click OK and the word source will show underlined. After you post the comment anyone who clicks on that underlined word 'source' will be taken to that page.

You can go to my article if you don't quite understand and see where this same link is used in the article. Putting it in an article is a little bit different than in a comment.

                    Ok Scoop, I've got 3.

                    1. This is a useful article that I would like to keep handy for reference purposes (as are others I've come across). How would I do that in Newsvine? Is there a "favorites" listing?
                    2. Does NV stand for Newsvine? When someone mentioned the state of affairs on NV, I thought they were talking about Nevada.
                    3. I have a friend. Let's call him.....Austin. He is an excellent writer, but he posts an exhorbitant amount of stuff on NV. I would like to find/read a few articles he wrote about a year ago. Let's say they're about his feelings toward his late dad. How would I search for this? Here's what I've tried: Going to his page, looking under the categories of articles, clicking on "memoirs" but only finding about 5 links (even though the list said there were about 500)...you get the idea. Is there a search bar or some such? If so, should I just put in a key word, or the author's name ("Austin", in this case).

                    Thanks so much!!
