Letourneau swarmed at 'Hot for Teacher' night

excerpt:"The outfit – a tight black minidress with silver sandals – was hardly classroom attire.

But from the moment the former Mary Kay Letourneau arrived Saturday night at Fuel Sports Eats and Beats – the Pioneer Square nightclub that hosted the "Hot for Teacher" event with her victim-turned-husband as DJ – she was swarmed.

Some said they remembered having her as a teacher. Others paid the $5 cover just to get a picture. A few, including some there for a birthday party, weren't aware of the event until they passed a parking lot packed with television news crews.

The former Highline School District teacher, now 47, spent more than seven years in prison for raping her former student, Vili Fualaau. A no-contact order was lifted in 2004 and the couple married less than a year later in a media-hyped wedding at Columbia Winery.

Since then, Fualaau, now 25, has been performing as DJ Headline, and worked out the "Hot for Teacher Night" idea with Mike Morris, owner of the bar that opened in 2005.

Funny? Clever? Tacky? Offensive? What's your take on this one?

I'd go with tacky, perhaps borderline offensive. They say that any publicity is good publicity, but the infamy associated with this story derives from the crime that Ms. Letournea committed. Aggrandizing her behavior could only serve to denigrate the seriousness of the acts she committed.

I vote for tacky. Ok, so you fell for your student. That's bad.

Then, you went on trial and were convicted. That's worse.

Finally, you married your student (now an adult who can make his own decisions) and go on to host "hot for teacher" nights? That's what I call ugly.

This is my last seed today.
With the exception of yesterday I've been trying to do 3 or less seeds a day so i can spend time going back and reading comments and stories from the last few writing exercises.

Speaking of which... the Random Words assignment is now up. It is here

I am undecided about their situation in general. As for making fun of themselves with a "hot for teacher" night... maintaining a good sense of humor is important, so I'll say funny.

Hm. Well, it makes me wonder about our rape laws.

I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers here Adrian, but what exactly do you wonder about our rape laws? I think it is totally reasonable to prosecute an adult that has sex with a minor. Just because the "victim" in this case was complicit, doesn't make it less of a crime.

I can't imagine a person would marry their rapist if they felt that the "rape" was a bad thing. Anything can be deemed a crime, its the rationale behind calling something a crime that matters.

While I agree with you in principle, especially in this case, I don't see a place to change the law and create a loophole for sex offenders. If a 45 year old man was having relations with your 13 year old daughter, but she said that the relationship was consensual, is the "rape" still a "bad thing"? Is there rational behind calling that a crime?

The problem is that a 20-something that has relations with a 15 year old is a sex offender as is the 40 something guy who molests a 6 year old. And both are "rape." IMO you need one law that says rape is rape, and another that says having sex with a minor is bad, yet they have nowhere near the same punishment associated with them.

I don't think its necessarily an issue of creating a loop hole. I think this idea that everything under 18 is rape needs to be ignored when a judgement is being carried out; not that the law needs to be changed. Choice and understanding is a component in these things.

Sorry, I have no problem with it.  In fact, I think the "hot for teacher night" idea is funny.  As for Ms. Letourneau -- men got away with taking underage girls into their beds for years with no consequences... a woman does it and "shock, horror, gasp".  Like I'm supposed to be appalled or something.  I don't think it was rape, I don't think she should be a registered sex offender and I'm pretty disgusted that she lost 7 years of her life in our penal system.

Hey Kellie39, not to start something but obviously you don't have any kids, especially a boy. I think this woman is touched in the head for having sex with a 15 year old. When I was 40 I certainly did not find them attractive. Cute maybe but have sex with them???? Sure in this case they lived happily ever after, but I tell you this. If ANY ONE had molested my son, namely a teacher, she would not live to teach another day.

You're what's wrong with society... You are one sicko... You must not have any young kids or you wouldn't want some Harold and Maude situation to come into your house....

Especially when this kid has obviously been affected by his rape and situation in life, he has been nothing but a deadbeat, a drunk, a drug user, arrested a couple times, could not hold a job, even at a fast food joint, he has nothing to offer the world other than his "story" about being raped...now, how sad is that? Gee, this adult woman, who you feel is OK to rape an 11 year old boy, has ruined his life forever.

Don't tell me there is no consequences when it is an older woman, young boy situation!

I think that this article shows that even if female teachers break the law as this lady did, things will work out and all will be forgiven. And not only that, but you can also have your cake and eat it too. Why did they even waste tax payers money on this case?!!!

The party is at best in poor taste. However, the party and current relationship are not a crime and if that is how this couple wish to throw it, than that is their right. I don't know all the details, but I don't think they were throwing a party for teachers and their underage students. I assumed it was a party for adults only, and the party was not held a children's establishment like 'Chuckee Cheese'. I don't think anyone was forced to attend this party, so let them have their fun. They could have changed the title of the party to be less offensive, but they don't care about what other people think.

Giving this woman free press is akin to glamorizing and promoting the rape of children.   The real criminals in this case are the news media.

You send a 37 year old woman to prison for 7.5 years for raping a 13 year old willing boy, lable her as a sex offender, and then turn around and arrest another 13 year old boy for raping a 85 year old woman and not charge the 85 year old woman the same as the 37 year old woman? Why not, the crime is the same or is that an 85 year old woman couldn't rape a 13 year old boy? An 85 year old woman doesnt have sexual desires any more? Come on, she isn't dead is she?

The scenario you described is totally different. The 85 year old was not a willing participant. The 13 year old boy raped her, which infers against her will. No she's not dead and she has the right to chose who she wants to have sex with.

How can you categorize the 2 separate incidents as the same thing... It seems that more and more teachers are having sexual meetings with their students and Mary Kay, also married at that time to another, had sex with her 13 yr old student over and over and you consider that the same as a 13 yr old raping a 85 yr old woman...Mary Kay deserved to go to prison and then the media glorifies her with this so called "Hot Teacher Night", what is next, maybe we can declare raping children a national holiday because it is portrayed as a party by the media.. Anything to sell papers, right...I sincerely hope, that the 13 yr old that raped that elderly lady gets his butt kicked all over the city that it occurred...he deserves it and more...In the time I was growing up, there was no thoughts of either incident happening because we were all raised to know better...

I wonder what people would think if the teacher had been male, and his student/victim female? Or even take it a step further and make them both the same sex. It just seems like there's a bit of inherent favoritism shown by the media in this particular type of crime. As if one type of child abuse is "less abusive" than others. Thoughts?

If it had been an adult male and a 11-12 year old girl, the man would NOT be having a big party in a downtown bar, that is for sure, and the public would have gone nuts when he married the girl later in life, especially if his rapes had created 2 children with her.

And, those who suggest the news media is partly to blame, I agree as I have seen some pretty prominent attnys on TV as "talking heads" saying how wonderful it was they were getting married blah blah blah ... yes, a certain segment of society is sick...you can tell that by the ratings of a lot of reality TV!

What is sick is the people who came out to see her and pay to have their photo taken with her, those are the sick people, because the attention they give Mary Kay and Vili just solidify in their minds that they were right and the laws and the rest of the world are wrong.

I wonder how many of those stupid people attending that nite in the bar have had their kids raped by anyone, male or female and if so, would THEY then go celebrate that rapist by attending a "party" in a bar for them?
