Dear NPR Morning Edition
On Tuesday you broadcast this report
about car stereo thefts being down. On Wednesday morning, while I was parked at an Austin library, someone stole my car stereo. At least half of the people to whom I've mentioned that my first month in Austin was marred by this respond by mentioning your report.

This has led me to a few conclusions or possibilities
a) The car stereo thief does not listen to NPR
b) The car stereo thief didn't listen to NPR before but he may now and if he is listening to you read this letter aloud I hope he will realize his faux pas.
c) The number of people who listen to NPR is higher than I thought.

On Saturday I realized that there was one other thing the theft took - an electric razor that I kept on the car seat. At first I thought did he think, while robbing the car, "man I need a shave?"

But I later decided maybe i'm coming at this backwards. The guy didnt break into my car, steal my stereo and then decide to steal my electric razor that was on my car seat. Rather he needed a shave and saw the electric razor and broke into my car and then thought "while i'm here.... I want to get a radio so I can listen to NPR."

Scott Butki

P.S. Maybe the thief was confused by the bumper sticker I have: Voluntary Simplicity: Less is more. Perhaps the word "voluntary" threw the person - I like to keep things simple but I like to make my own choices on how simple I want things to be.

What do you think? Should I submit this?

If so someone needs to tell me if it airs since clearly I won't be able to hear it.

That said, I lost a stereo but gained a job so overall it was a good week.

I like the classic music on NPR.

You are lucky that still have the car. My friends were parked in a restaurant and their car wasn't flashy disappeared. They have to rush and buy another car and the next day a lady confused the red light with a green, my friend was turning right and voila, the car is still in the repair shop and have a rental.

I previously wrote about this car stereo as part of this writing perspective exercise.

Speaking of which...

I want to start a new writing exercise for April. I want to return to doing, in addition to the weekly Bones exercise, a monthly exercise where you write from a particular perspective. In the past we have written from the perspective of cars, computers, phones, pumpkins and maybe one or two I'm forgetting.

Does someone have a suggestion for one for April? If so i'll write it up on April 2 (since if I do it April 1 people may assume i'm kidding. There's one thing I don't kid about and it's kidding. No, wait...)

Don't plan to submit a photo (besides it's radio) - those are the only two photos i could find of the truck.

May I recommend one more referral, Scoop? H & R Block. They will only be too happy to accept a Goodwill receipt if you donate that unfortunate hat. Somewhere, right now, a high school drama class is getting ready to put on a really, really bad version of some 70's play that never quite made it to Broadway.

Too bad the hat wasn't in the car.

Thanks, Ian.

grrr

I got a voice mail today from my dentist back in MD, reminding me of an appointment tomorrow. I called back to explain why I won't be making it. I thought I'd told all my doctors of the move but obviously I missed one.

The part about work I realized today is that you won't be seeing actual papers but rather staring at a computer with scanned images of the paper so now i understand why people who work here speak about not wanting to go online after working all day.

Steve and Ian, are you up for some new writing exercises. We can do perspective ones, random words (the last was here) and/or photo ones.

I have first day of new job jitters. Meanwhile, my laptop computer is saying "don't leave me here, master scott, alone with that tv - it's been trying to put its moves on me!" it's even using pick up lines: http://tinyurl.com/c54okt. Something to ponder. Wish me luck.

I had a great first day at my new job even if it was mostly just training.

So the cool thing I found out today was that while this is not the special ed job I was hoping to easily find when I moved here, the tests I will be grading ARE from special ed students. So it'll still look good on the resume.

We got out of work early (which we were told will be unusual) so I used the opportunity to finish my vehicle inspection so now my truck has a sticker for Texas even though I personal am still several steps away from getting a Texas license myself.

Turns out of 25 or so in our group that will be grading 10th grade students on the same prompt at least five also just moved to Austin so i'm not alone in it being not only a "bridge" job until other jobs come along but also a "bridge" job in being good while getting other ducks in the row, as it were.

Switching gears...

If somone wants a good topic for an article how about something like this and published to the how to group

How to choose how to record your favorite tv shows?

Take my personal example. I move to a new town, borrow a tv and vcr/dvd player, get cable but the dvd and tv won't talk (probably because it's older)

So.. a) options include buy new vcr/dvd so i can resume videotaping shows

b) get a dvr

c) get tivo

d) whatever other options exist.

e) watch all your favorite shows for free on HULU.

I have issues with hulu namely i can't read emails or play games on my laptop while watching tv if that tv is on hulu.

Gotta multi-task- solo/uno tasking is just not the way i do things.

A few random thoughts:

I have cousins who say I ruined google for them because if they type in Butki it will invariably be 20 links by or about me.

I'm planning on catching up on brothers and sisters since apparently its the one show mom and sis watch and discuss regularly and it'd be kind of cool for a brother and sister to watch, well, brothers and sisters.

Hmm, should I watch the dvds for the Friday Night Lights series to better assimilate in this Texas culture?

Want to hear my proud uncle moment of the day?

I met the girls (and their mom, who they have finally understood is my sister - took a while to get that concept through) at Panda Express. Usually they beat me to a location so when they saw what looked my truck they were skeptical and asked, "how can we be sure it's his?" So the 7 year old niece says, "Let's just see if the truck is missing the stereo and if it is then we'll know it's Uncle Scott's!"

I have been thinking today about this incident which was a double whammy, the bad news being the loss of a car radio (never did get a new one) and the good news being it happened right before a job interview and I held it together enough that I got that temp job.. and now a year later I'm

about to start that season job again.
