Surely I'm not the only person who watches as much of the Olympics as possible. I'm also probably not alone in watching the olympics on tv even though I rarely watch sports on tv unless at a party. There's just something special about watching the Olympics. That said, I think there are more people at Newsvine probably watching the Olympics than have let on so far. So why not get some discussions going? (It's like American Idol - there are many who watch it but don't admit they watch it.. until they read someone else's commentary and then they're all in their face correcting them. I set up a discussion earlier for the serious issues - protests, human rights, etc. This is a place to talk about the lighter stuff, from "can you believe these new swimsuits?" to "how do they get those graphic images on top of the swimmers and doesn't someone risk electrocution in the progress" to "Is it unAmerican to cheer on nations other than America?" Below are some random thoughts - partially because I'm scatter brained today - on waching the Olympics Sunday. I'll add thoughts below over timeFor weeks - ok, months - I've been trying to assemble the troops> writers to help cover and recap the Olympics. Jack Huang stepped up to the proverbial plate, doing a bang-up job here, here and here covering the opening ceremonies Friday. If anyone else has written stories on the Olympics feel free to link to that below.
i'm really happy so far with the rowing coverage - they've been showing most of the heats, in full (which was extremely rare in the past - normally they would show abbreviated versions of the heats and even the finals), in which the US has a boat. unfortunately storms on sunday delayed to monday the mens 8 heats, where the US is competing to defend the gold they won in athens.
it's important to get a break from the coverage now and then. we made sure to keep watching the "rescue me" reruns last night - overdosing on the first weekend is bad and dangerous stuff.
in case anyone else is interested in rowing - or just the interesting thoughts posted by observers, including the opening ceremony and what it's like being in beijing (lots of helpful people, no dogs), check out row2k's blog, written by a couple of former US gold medal scullers.
rowing, certainly - after that, i've always liked the swimming events, which is heightened by the fact that my girl was a record-breaking high school swimmer, making it even more fun to watch and analyze the races, and track and field. i watched some water polo today, too. because of the drama and personalities, i also like watching the gymnastics and diving events.
10 reasons why rowing should get more coverage and/or attention
that i could do - good idea. a deeper analysis is a little out of my reach this week.
Well, synchro diving takes far more athleticism than, say, karaoke. :-p
I like it: there's more grace to it than singles diving, and much more difficult subtle athleticism. Oh, and Guo Jingjing is hawt (and she totally pwns the sport).
I am catching bits and pieces here and there and we have really good coverage on tv. Two channels of our only five are totally committed to the games. I quite enjoyed the synchronized diving too.
Synchro diving was wicked awesome... and not just because China totally pwned. ;-)
China wins gold in men's gymnastics team event! Uberpsychtastic!
And the anthem plays...
We've waited 12 years for this. Finally, we get our due, especially Yang Wei, Li Xiaopeng, and Huang Xu.
My one big thing that I can't get past is Bob Costas's hair. I don't remember it ever being that dark. Is he getting paid by "Just For Men" or what? It's distracting.
I have been watching most of the swimming because Australia traditionally does well and I swim almost every day myself so swimming to me is my form of Yoga. I like the gymnastics too and the Diving. I guess I be into the Cycling and Athletics anytime soon as well !
I love watching men cry when they win the gold. Does my heart good.
It is the raw emotion of all that work, all the determination coming full circle. It just gives me warm fuzzies.
I agree with what you are saying about the Phelps win; in all his interviews he seems to be just a regular guy, very unassuming, low-key. And it is going to be a media circus when he gets back to the states. We are more than likely going to be having Phelps shoved at us for breakfast, lunch, dinner, probably wiping our butts too. Yet, you have to give it to the guy and his determination to win.....Wow.
It is not going to make me want to buy Wheaties tho. EVER!! Yuck! Or speedo's. Or anything else he endorses. But if his Mom says she whooped his ass once in awhile, I'm going to buy my boy a padded paddle.
tee-hee
Hehe, the ass-slapping is funny, especially since I remember the ass-slap-of-encouragement scene from Flubber.
