Surely I'm not the only person who watches as much of the Olympics as possible. I'm also probably not alone in watching the olympics on tv even though I rarely watch sports on tv unless at a party. There's just something special about watching the Olympics. That said, I think there are more people at Newsvine probably watching the Olympics than have let on so far. So why not get some discussions going? (It's like American Idol - there are many who watch it but don't admit they watch it.. until they read someone else's commentary and then they're all in their face correcting them. I set up a discussion earlier for the serious issues - protests, human rights, etc. This is a place to talk about the lighter stuff, from "can you believe these new swimsuits?" to "how do they get those graphic images on top of the swimmers and doesn't someone risk electrocution in the progress" to "Is it unAmerican to cheer on nations other than America?" Below are some random thoughts - partially because I'm scatter brained today - on waching the Olympics Sunday. I'll add thoughts below over timeFor weeks - ok, months - I've been trying to assemble the troops> writers to help cover and recap the Olympics. Jack Huang stepped up to the proverbial plate, doing a bang-up job here, here and here covering the opening ceremonies Friday. If anyone else has written stories on the Olympics feel free to link to that below.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Started my olympics watching today with the woman's cycling competition.

Currently watching the swimming competitions.

I'm reminded of my days on the swim team as a child. Remind me later to tell you about my hair turning green. (I figure I'll get time to catch up during commericals and when there are sports on about which I have no interest at all.)

The two sports I've been best at in my life are, coincidentally, swimming and cycling. I also played soccer but I was about as good as that I was as a member of a high school marching band, which is to say not well.

Ok, the green hair story. My blonde hair turned green due to the chlorine. Mom had her own solution to this problem, one she claimed was successful and common.

That solution? Ketchup. Yes, in my hair.

These days I think there's better solutions that would not spark a silly kid to suggest rubbing french fries on his head.

Feeling like a bit of a hypocrite at the moment. I'm at my usual coffeehouse aka my Newsvine "office." 99.9 percent of the time when I'm here I'm reading and listening to music and I've been known to list as a pet peeve those occasions when someone will come in, turn on the tv and disrupt those of us listening to the music and reading. Now I'm watching the Olympics here (I have no net access at home) so now I've become one of those annoying people watching the tv with the sound on.

Put simply I've become my own peeve.

My mind will explode in 10 seconds.

However, I refuse to do the most annoying related thing, namely leaving the tv on with volume up as I leave. And that's not just because I rarely leave here on Sunday nights before they close up at 8.

Watching these buff dudes with their muscles and tattoos is making me feel like quite a wimp. In comparison check out the photos above of my brother

i'm really happy so far with the rowing coverage - they've been showing most of the heats, in full (which was extremely rare in the past - normally they would show abbreviated versions of the heats and even the finals), in which the US has a boat. unfortunately storms on sunday delayed to monday the mens 8 heats, where the US is competing to defend the gold they won in athens.

it's important to get a break from the coverage now and then. we made sure to keep watching the "rescue me" reruns last night - overdosing on the first weekend is bad and dangerous stuff.

Then I guess it's good I was offline and without access to a tv all weekend.

What events are your favorite to watch, Firsty? BTW I just emailed the Springsteen questions.

rowing, certainly - after that, i've always liked the swimming events, which is heightened by the fact that my girl was a record-breaking high school swimmer, making it even more fun to watch and analyze the races, and track and field. i watched some water polo today, too. because of the drama and personalities, i also like watching the gymnastics and diving events.

The strength (and weakness) about lists is that they don't require much thought or depth.

Currently on tv - synchronized diving.

You know I've never understood why synchronized diving is considered a sport. Does someone want to defend it? Isn't it about as much a sport as, say, karaoke in that it's all about copying someone?

Time to hit mute and do some reading.

Well, synchro diving takes far more athleticism than, say, karaoke. :-p

I like it: there's more grace to it than singles diving, and much more difficult subtle athleticism. Oh, and Guo Jingjing is hawt (and she totally pwns the sport).

Ah, yes, I left out the "artistry" argument - or in this case "grace" - but if we're including factors like grace in whether something is a sport than what about gardeners or those people who turn bushes into animals?

I'll have to watch for Gao.

Remind me what pwn means? Yes I AM clueless.

Tom Brokaw is on NBC right now discussing boycotts but with the boycott threatened of the L.A. Olympics.

I don't know about others but I miss Brokaw.

The L.A. Olympics was the closest I came to the Olympics.I even saw a few seconds of a cycling event or two.

Over the next few days I'm going to create an Olympics drinking game.

First two entries for it:
1)Each time a gymantics commentator says, "wow" and/or something so obvious that you can say it without any need for gymanastic knowledge, you drink.
2)Each comment showing an obvious bias toward America in the NBC coverage
Are you drunk yet from just those two rules?

Hehehe, it was amusing to watch the commentators talk about Liukin getting "robbed" of a 16 on balance beam, when the only reason they'd say that is because the last two American routines were skewed high.

2)Each comment showing an obvious bias toward America in the NBC coverage

I'm actually a bit annoyed at the women's gymnastics scoring. The US had two catastrophic mishaps (the early-injury girl and Liukin) on medium-difficulty routines, and they both received decent 15s. Ridiculous.

Yeah I'd wondered about that. Also ever notice than any mistake made by a U.S. woman is a "tragedy" while that label is not used for other nation's athlete's mistakes.

Heh, the men's 4x100 relay was amazing. I have no idea how Lezac surged more than a head-length in the last five meters.

Oh, and gymnastics. Kinda sad that, even with two major US falls, formerly dominant Russia still can't compete with them.

And is it just me, or (with the exception of Liukin) do this year's women's gymnastics team look like bodybuilders compared to previous years?

Did anyone else catch the comment made by a gymnastic commentator. He was trying to note how many - he said everyone - is now looking and trying to guess the real age of the Chinese athletes. He then perhaps told us a bit too much when he said essentially "who hasn't looked at college students and thought they were really older than were."

Actually, that was a misunderstanding that I had sift through, myself. It's still a bit confusing

The aerial chase shot of the "giant's footsteps" fireworks was CG (due to the no-fly restriction over Beijing) both on TV broadcasts and projected onto the scrim of the Bird's Nest. However, apparently, they did shoot the fireworks off... for the benefit of the non-attending townfolk?

Question: What happened to the idea that you couldn't be in the Olympics if you were a professional athlete? That was a primary topic in the book about the 1960 Olympics, when just a few dollars for an endorsement or a scene in a movie, would block someone from being eligible to attend the Olympics? Now I've always wondered how and why the NBA players could play but I read today about some gymnasts and swimmers getting lots of money and yet still playing in their sports. How can this be? And is anyone else bothered by this?

That reminds me - I went from NBC to MSNBC when the soaps came on. At one point someone came into the coffeehouse and asked me how the stock market was doing. I gave her a look that says "I follow the stock market as closely as I yearn for Madonna's 69th comeback (which to say not at all) and she tuned to CNBC where she got her stock fix and I got more Olympic coverage.

Anyway... right now water polo's on. A great sport. My brother was on the high school water polo team. I was told not to try out becaues of asthma but I like to think I would've been good at it.

Got distracted when one of the guys I live/work with got all excited about some "guy on tv kissing everyone" Checked it out - it was Elvis - and had to make sure my guy wasnt going to go kiss everyone HE knows at work. Another day, another pseudo-scandal so I'll turn to Jack for comment.
Jack, what's your take on this controversy over whether this girl sang or not

The usual rule of journalism is two is a couple, three is a trend so when three people - or in this case there are three examples in a ceremony - you can expect a bunch of trend pieces. Though I predict this time many media outlets will jump the gun.

I think we'll see a bunch of stories noting that now there's been two misrepresentations (the fireworks and the singing) and asking, what's next? Personally I think someone will suggest the water is tainted and that's why so many swimming records are being broken.

I already seeded this story suggesting that the swimming records are being broken due to technological developments.

Any thoughts on this?

Regarding the singing: meh. Pop stars do it all the time, and people still pay thousands for box seats to "concerts." I think the "scandal" is very believable, and I don't really care either way. It's far more reliable to have a prerecorded voice and stage actor tan to have a 12-year-old sing on the world's greatest stage, live -- and I'd rather have a successful semi-illusion than a complete reality that cripples the entire show.

Personally I think someone will suggest the water is tainted and that's why so many swimming records are being broken.

My parents suggested that after the first two world record smashes. Maybe they're using heavy water. More buoyancy. Since the Water Cube was financed partly by Hong Kong billionaires (Guo Jingjing's BF being one of them), I'll bet they could spare the expense to refine thousands (millions) of gallons of heavy water. :-p

Ah. I've started linking to actual stories versus seeded links of stories to try to cut back on self-promotion. I figure that way we can comment on the story either here or go to my column and find the seed. But since you asked nicely the Yao one is here

But speaking of news here's two other stories I just seeded, both about a possibly racist ad.

This piece summed it up nicely:

It wasn't a great day for international harmony at the Olympics. First there was the flap over the ads in the Spanish sports daily Marca, which showed Spain's men's and women's Olympic basketball teams pulling the skin back from their eyes as a light-hearted way of saying they were going to Beijing for the Games. The ad was for the Spanish courier company Seur, and the likelihood that it was deliberately offensive is low, given that Spain basketball has been sponsored by and wearing uniforms made by the Chinese company Li-Ning since 2002 and just signed an agreement to continue doing so through 2012. (All those details are in this post on the Rings blog, but be sure to read to the bottom, as it was updated continually throughout the day

They skipped over the very common sliced jellyfish head and the semi-common delicacy of young sea cucumber.

Is anyone else starting to wish Phelps would lose so that his ego won't become the size of China?

Right now I'm at a house with verrrrrrrrrrry slow wifi access so my time on here will be limited and I'm only seeding 3 stories. We're watching ESPN as for the first time in 40 years the local (Williamsport, MD) little league team is in the national championships. I'm hoping to watch the Olympics later. It is the raw emotion of all that work, all the determination coming full circle. It just gives me warm fuzzies.

I agree with what you are saying about the Phelps win; in all his interviews he seems to be just a regular guy, very unassuming, low-key. And it is going to be a media circus when he gets back to the states. We are more than likely going to be having Phelps shoved at us for breakfast, lunch, dinner, probably wiping our butts too. Yet, you have to give it to the guy and his determination to win.....Wow.

It is not going to make me want to buy Wheaties tho. EVER!! Yuck! Or speedo's. Or anything else he endorses. But if his Mom says she whooped his ass once in awhile, I'm going to buy my boy a padded paddle.

I ask because men crying has been a fascination of mine. See this piece for some prior musings on the topic Slate has a fun piece today asking "Why are beach-volleyball players always patting each other on the butt?
excerpt:"

The U.S. women's team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, foisted as sex symbols upon a complacent republic, compete in two-pieces with translucent panels—hardly sportsladylike. Nor do the sartorial choices of the U.S. volleyboys inspire confidence in the seriousness of their endeavor. A nighttime match saw Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser wearing sunglasses with the lenses popped out, sporting the hideous frames for the sake of the sponsors. "It's a different kind of look," one NBC commentator commentated. His partner agreed, "It's a different kind of look, that's for sure." Conspicuously, Olympic beach volleyball involves cheerleaders. At first blush, this might seem to argue in favor of its worthiness, but you must understand that these are nonpartisan cheerleaders. To quote NBCOlympics.com, the young ladies simply "use a variety of dances to make sure the fans stay rowdy." Beach volleyball seems to be alone in Beijing in employing such bikini-clad rabble-rousers. Please correct me if I'm wrong and, in fact, the gals will be prancing over to the track for the triple jump or out to the shooting range for the skeet final. Though there should be no need to demonstrate the frivolity of the "sport" any further, its real proof is in the way that beach-volleyball players touch each other, almost without exception, after every point. In general, a point won, no matter how mundane, necessitates either a double high-five accompanied by a celebratory hoot or a congratulatory ass slap of the type that George W. Bush demurred from planting on May-Treanor. A point lost might call for a consoling ass slap and a murmur of encouragement, perhaps after pulling one's partner up out of the sand. You'd think that these people, being Olympic athletes, might have learned how to stand up all by themselves, but that's teamwork in action.

Taking Sprinting to New HeightsThe 6-foot-5 Usain Bolt set a world record in the 100-meter dash. Short sprinters, beware.
an excerpt:"
Usain Bolt, the 21-year-old Jamaican who set a world record in winning the Olympic 100-meter dash this weekend, is the most extraordinary sprinter in track-and-field history. Not because he's so fast, but because he's so big. At six-foot-five, Bolt has been called by Sports Illustrated "the tallest world-class sprinter in history." He's easy to spot on the track, Goliath-ing over his human-scale opponents. The starting blocks cramp his frame. As he kneels for the gun, his rump rises high above his competitors'. Once the race starts, he looks like a high schooler who lied about his age to win a Field Day ribbon. Bolt takes 40 to 41 strides in a 100-meter race. Walter Dix, the 5-foot-9 bronze medalist, takes 47.

      Well done, Jack:)

Here's another good one from Slate:
Why are Jamaicans so good at sprinting?

Jamaicans dominated the Olympic 100-meter sprint this weekend, with Usain Bolt setting a world record and his teammates taking all three medals in the women's event. Jamaica is a poor, tiny nation about half the size of New Jersey. What makes its people such champion sprinters?

A combination of nature and nurture. Runners of West African descent—which includes Jamaicans as well as most African-Americans—seem to be built for speed: In 2004, they held all but five of the 500 best times in the 100-meter dash. (East Africans, such as Kenyans and Ethiopians, rule the long-distance field.) Several biological factors may be coming into play here. One study conducted in Quebec in the 1980s found that black West African students had significantly higher amounts of "fast-twitch" muscle fibers—the kind that are responsible for short, explosive bursts of action—than white French Canadians did. (So far, there is no evidence that even extensive training can turn slow-twitch muscles into fast-twitch ones, though moving in the other direction is possible.)
