If you are like me (and god help you if you are) you're getting a bit tired of reading the same criticisms and arguments against Obama day after day. Especially since many of them have been rebutted.
So I had an idea. Obama has a web page to rebut hoaxes and false rumors and I'm sure McCain has one too.
Why not have an article that serves as an index of articles and seeds at Newsvine that rebut some of these arguments and attacks.
That's what I hope to do with this article
I'll post some arguments and rebuttals to get us started.
The Middle East Trip
1. The alleged snub of the troops, disproven here and here and here (with McCain's commerical)
2. The "volume" argument, i.e. the media is spending too much time on Obama and not enough on McCain - rebutted here this piece: Obama lavished with airtime -- and criticism
3. The media was not covering McCain at all, rebutted here with this NYT analysis piece pointing out the boring stuff McCain was doing while Obama was doing much more newsworthy events
4. The media isn't asking hard questions - rebutted and explained here
5. The general catch-22, i.e. he gets criticized for not going to Iraq then get criticized for the media coverage when he DOES go to Iraq.
Obama has not been vetted Most direct rebuttal is here
The alleged liberal media bias
Stacy seeded a study disputing the bias issue. Wooblahalso wrote a story disputing the liberal media theory. Stacy also seeded a great story with this amazing headline: That "Liberal Media" that is totally in the bag for Obama edits out McCain's embarassingly false statement about The Surge during CBS interview as did Bondibox
Obama's background
His middle name is Hussein - which proving what exactly? Some are taking his name as their own
Rumors: Obama was muslim: rebutted here and here
Civil rights leaders were slow to endorse him - explained here - and what's the deal with his weird hands-off policy with muslims (explained here)
Sounds like a good idea to me. A quick site for reference and a site to send the eternally befuddled. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute.
It makes sense but the people who need the information to make considered vote based on reality will not go here.
Nice collection of articles--the only thing that really suprised me was that the Rudy group is STILL ALIVE. :|
Though it doesn't have what inevitably worries me about Obama--that he'll go into office and, in traditional politician style, won't deliver a single thing he promises. Considering that his whole platform is on changing the system, there's going to be a whole lot of angry, hurt, and confused public if he does not or can not deliver.
I hadn't listed that because my usual response to that is how is that something specific or different for obama than any other candidate? You never know what they'll deliver whether it's Obama or McCain or whoever
Maybe it's because that's what he placed his entire campaign on?
Some renege, some just can't deliver.
For instance if McCain wins the presidency he'll most like face an even more democratic House and Senate. Just what campaign promises will he be able to keep under those circumstances?
Sure, Obama is making promises but unlike McCain, Obama offers a glimmer of hope for change and that's enough for me.
As opposed to McCain offering no promises or pledges? You lost me. Don't all politicians offer promises which they invariably renege on?
I'm not saying McCain is any better or worse--hell, out of the two, I'd be more comfortable with the mysterious smooth-talker then the senile liar. The difference between the two that I find is that Obama isn't just making your usual campaign promises, he's promising to CHANGE THE SYSTEM, which is causing a lot of people who wouldn't care either way to look at him and making people hope--unlike McCain, whom finding him breaking promises would be par for the course, Obama doing it will hurt a hell of a lot more.
Scott,
I don't know if these could be considered rebuttal but they sure do give light to the "playing the race card" issue.
First from Huffington post an article references the McCain camp putting Obama's picture on a $100 bill:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-shaw/reading-the-pictures-emdo_b_116451.html
Then another article from Ben Smith's Blog on Politico referencing a video on youtube;
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0808/Obama_explains_dollar_bill_line.html?showall
And finally the youtube video, obviously posted from McCain's camp and posted to youtube on June 30:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPARec32KMI
Seems the McCain camps' claim of Obama playing the race card while speaking just recently was preceded by their having already done what he said they would.
FWIW, I sure don't remember the Obama camp calling this video "playing the race card" and as I see it, it meets the criteria.
Received and accepted, thank you. Enjoy Denver I think that's fantastic.
Ooops! My mistake. There are days when confusion reigns supreme in my mind.
