Who Wants To Help Cover the Olympics For Newsvine?

advertisement

The Olympics are six weeks away.

I'm writing this article to start organizing who wants to cover what. I'm hoping some of my usual tv recappers will do as I do, namely cover some of these events via watching them on tv and writing about it.

I will remind you that my advice on how to recap tv programs is here and Vacelts' is here I also continue to recruit people to cover summer tv shows over here

I thought about starting a new group just to cover the Olympics so it can all be in one central place but I think we all agree there's plenty of groups already.

So instead I suggest all stories about the Olympics be published to Sports Fans, TV-Guide and (if you focus on it from the television entertainment angle) to the Entertainment Gateway.

I'm particularly intereste in getting coverage commitments from non-Americans. There's two advantages to that: 1)Many Newsviners are Americans only exposed to American news media and thus the coverage will be focused on the Americans. But Newsvine is supposed to be international so I think it'd be great – in fact I see it as essentially incumbent on us – to look at the Olympics from 2) I think it'd be fascinating to compare media coverage of the Olympics between US media and other media. This would work particularly well for someone with a dish who can pick up media from other nations.

Important: Include a spoiler warning in all articles that reveal winners if you're writing it before that event has been televised.

If anyone reading this is going to the Olympics – as a fan or athlete – post below or email me because it'd be great to have some first-hand reporting.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Any questions?

As we get closer to the event's starts I'll throw out suggested story ideas. For now I just wanted to gauge interest.

And, yes, it's ok for some events to be covered by more than one person. I'm guessing we'll have multiple people wanting to cover events like soccer

I want to BOYCOTT THE OLYMPICS. It has never been about amateur athletics. It started as a demonstration of the military might of different countries (that is why the shooting and riding sports are there). The recent behavior of the Chinese government is atrocious. They even used the torch relay through Tibet to arrest the vast majority of the monks (one monastery used to have 550 monks, now there are 10!).

In addiiton, we will have "balanced" reporting forced on us. The American women won Softball. NOT ONE game was televised. Instead we were forced to in depth pieces on the Kenyan marathon runners. The time difference will make the games be time delayed (When it is 9 AM PDT it is 1 am in Bejing). This means the games starting at noon in China it will be 11 PM in New York. Any afternoon or evening events will be after everyone is in bed! BUT the reporters will act as if their tape delay is LIVE. They think we are stupid.

Do NOT cover the Olympics BURY them!

BTW, if you did not know, this is the last year Softball will be an Olympic sport. The powers that be do not like the United States to dominate any sport.

Not only am I not going to boycott the olympics but I'm not only going to write about them but am publishing an interview tomorrow with the author of what I expect will be a bestseller about the 1960 Olympics. Details here.

Your mistake for encouraging the human rights debacle in China. Which 1960 Olympics? Summer or Winter? Summer was in Rome. Winter was in Squaw Valley. The 1960 Olympics was the last one that South Africa was allowed to participate because of the human rights issue of Apartheid. Interesting how the knife only cuts in one direction on human rights.

Oh, yes, I'm responsible for hurting human rights, that's why I've seeded at least 25 stories about human rights abuses and do so at every opportunity.

Much better to bury my head in the sand and act like the Olympics don't exist than to write about it and talk about what's really going on.

Next time a "no, thanks," would be sufficent to the question of whether you want to help.

Yes I made a point of asking about that.

You can justify encouraging China because you have done "so much" elsewhere?

How am I "encouraging" China by writing about what happens there, be it human rights abuses or olympics events or both?

How are you discouraging China by not writing about it?

Meanwhile, we're talking here about whether we should boycott the Olympics and over here there's a Chinese woman defending the Chinese government.

I'm on top of the olympics. I'm even trying to organize some of us to cover the tv coverage and I did an interview with the author of what I expect will be a bestseller about the 1960 Olympics.

Oh and here's an interesting piece on how NBC is tracking all of this (and us - cue ominous music) Off to go put on some pants since I may be on camera right now

Just realized an immediate problem: I'm scheduled to go to a church event this weekend but that'll mean missing the opening ceremonies? can we get someone to cover that?
