Satire: American Idol Announces Major Changes Including New Theme: Offensive Songs

advertisement

American Idol will be making five changes for next week's show, according to information obtained by Newsvine's Weakly World News.

The changes are made in response to what happened to Carly last week, a miscarriage of justice so serious it even warranted coverage by the New York Times.

First, drinking games, including one described here, are now prohibited after Brooke has blamed such games – and her partaking of them – caused her to screw up in last week's show.

Second, all patriotic songs have been banned. No more "God Bless America," "God Bless the USA, "America the Beautiful" other songs may be sung since they are such blatant attempts to manipulate the audience into voting based out of patriotism instead of what really matters in this contest - popularity talent. Anyone violating this rule will have to sit with Paula and Randy for three hours and correct or stop them each time they mangle the English language with words like "pitchy," "dawg," "rangey" or "yo."

Third, only difficult questions may be asked during the call-in feature. Similarly all manipulation of the show, as the New York Times has reported on. Apparently the newspaper is covering the show better than they covered the build up to this war. Sample tough question: Why are you giving people like Neil Diamond more airtime?

Fourth, Simon will have a veto option, giving him the right to veto the audience's chose when it has chosen badly, as it did with Chikeze and Carly.

Fifth, for the next month the show will have a new theme, that theme being Offensive Songs.

Only songs from the following list may be chosen. The songs are chosen because they offend at least one group, be it Christians, squares, cops, your mama, cops, etc.:

Smiths - Meat Is Murder
Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK
XTC - Dear God
Depeche Mode- Blasphemous Rumors
Eric Clapton- Cocaine
Velvet Underground - Heroin
Divnyls - I touch myself
Afroman - I Get High
Dead Kennedys - Too Drunk To (expletive delete) Yeastie Girls/Consolidated - Now You Suck
Prince - Darling Nikki
Cindy Lauper - She Bop
The Vapors - Turning Japanese

Time Zone - World Destruction

(This news is still breaking so more information will be added throughout the day)

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Can you imagine Ryan Seacrest having to introduce a song by the Dead Kennedys or Circle Jerks? That would be so great.

New rule: Nobody named David is allowed to join the show as there's plenty of talented musicians not named David badly needing exposure.

Other new rule - don't accept memebrs under 18 thus avoiding the whole parent involvement problem with David A's dad.

Also valid any song by Nine Inch Nails especially Closer with the refrain about wanting to
    do something like an animal.

When I used to go to church my boyfriend at the time and I helped with a play for the youth service. There was a scene with all these kids carrying signs (i.e. "I love drugs") dancing around when Jesus rising up amongst them to show them "the way". When the "sinners" came in, dancing about with their signs, our sound design had "Closer" playing. The look on the bluehairs' faces when they heard the refrain was priceless.

Along with "why don't we do it in the road?" Sure.

On Today they were promoting an item about Idol. They said, "Later, are big changes in store for American Idol?"

I was half awake and I thought, "Whoa! What did I do?"

Think they were talking about changing out one of the judges.

This is what I wrote at Vacelts Idol recap of last nite: You know the saying – I think it was also an Elvis album - millions of fans can't be wrong? I've always thought that was a farce and Neil Diamond is a good example of that. Diamond is responsible for so much popular dreck. Yuck,

The song "America" is a prefect example of that – a song that says so little yet acts like it's saying so much. I was hoping one of the singers I like would grab that choice because whoever picked it is pretty much saved – it's like singing God Bless the USA, a way to get guaranteed continuation for a week. I suggested, in my satire piece over the weekend, that this kind of song should be banned because it's so manipulative.

I say get rid of Jason – he again acts like he's not taking this seriously. There's no way he measures up well against the other four.

I always perceived the Neil Diamond song "America" as being about us being an country of immigrants. I think in the current political climate, such a theme could cut both ways with the American Idol viewership (that is, if they are swayed by songs such as "God Bless the USA").

I could be wrong. It's been a looooooooooooonnnnnnnng time since I've heard that song.

As usual Television Without Pity has a great recap of Idol. It starts off with this:

Ryan refers to "last week's drama" with Carly, and then makes the crowd say hello to Carly like they're in kindergarten. His hair is just a little off-center tonight, which I've always wanted. He seems a little bubbly and giddy, but not as much as Paula, whose cloudy eyes and wobbly demeanor are clear from the get-go.

The Today Show covered the controversy this morning but again pissed me off by implying they had something new to report (and implied, I thought, that Paula was going to be on in a minute – she was not.) when instead they just covered the gossip (blogs say Paula was drunk – she denies it), explaining what happened (Paula was responding to the rehearsals she heard)

It does still raise questions about manipulation (as we've talked about here) if the judges are reacting not just to the tv "live" performance but at least in Paulas case also the rehearsals heard earlier.

I thought the Television Without Pity coverage of Tuesday's show summed it up well:

          This is great:

Paula's notes say, his first song exposed his lovely lower register, but the second song left him empty, and altogether he wasn't fighting hard enough to get into the top four. Ryan gets super, super scared and stares around and Randy finally mentions to her -- as Simon half-mooses his ass off -- that they're only halfway through. She stumbles around for a second, completely confused because her notes are clearly there in front of her, and Ryan makes a joke about fi she can see the future. Simon and Randy chuckle about it, because it's not actually that big a deal -- it's a lot easier to judge the performances in rehearsal, and then compare those initial impressions against the live performances, but like... Paula's whole thing has been "keep rolling, do the professional thing," and a show that is this much about bread and circuses can't be suddenly springing @!$%# like this on the audience, because if you question the narrative of the show, which Ryan packages up so pretty for us, then you start to question everything. I mean, if you really thought about it you'd already know that they've heard these songs at least twice at this point, but putting it out there means you've broken the wall and reminded us that this is a production, full-fledged, with billions of bucks being poured into it to make it the biggest show in all of television history, and that's a step the puppetmasters can't afford, because if that's fake, then what else is fake?
          A: Everything, obviously.)

I think, in the future, I would start looking very closely for instances of Paula's audio not syncing with her video.

One wit said why watch future shows - if you just listen to paula she can predict the future. Ok off to add new suggested questions for the call-in part of the show: why does the opening song always suck, reminding me a bit of up with people? Why limit songs to 9o seconds? Why not dump randy and paula who never offer helpful criticism anyway?
