Idol' Song Choice, Jesus Christ Superstar, Courts Controversy and Finds It; Singer Is Voted Off

Read ArticleArticle Source: The New York Times

excerpt:"Online chat boards devoted to "American Idol" have been abuzz since Ms. Smithson performed the title song from "Jesus Christ Superstar" — the 1970 rock opera, which many Christians consider offensive — on Tuesday's episode. Ms. Smithson received the fewest votes of the six remaining contestants following her Tuesday performance. Her elimination was announced on Wednesday night's episode. The week's performances were drawn from the works of Andrew Lloyd Webber, who wrote "Jesus Christ Superstar" with Tim Rice.

Since its debut, and particularly following the release of the 1973 film version, "Jesus Christ Superstar" has been railed against by some Christians for its portrayal of Jesus as confused and at times unwilling to accept his role, and because it hints that he had a sexual relationship with Mary Magdalene. Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I was wondering, as was Vacelts and others, why Carly got kicked off. Guess some saw it as blashphemy. Doesn't seem fair since it was Webber who suggested the song choice.

It is likely the song plus the tattoos. It likely did not help that she is originally from Ireland. My Irish ancestors got nasty reactions for being here after all.

She should have a good career. It may be a blessing in disguise for her. She is not saddled with the recording contract the winner has to agree to.

I would be less bothered by this if I didn't think that the woman who sang "god bless america" got "saved" by choosing that song before. Was that Brook? Maybe that's why she's still around.

Wonder what would have happened had the song choices been reversed

I don't watch the show but what I'm getting from all this is that it would be bad to sing "Dear God" if American Idol has an XTC night.

You know, it's funny you say that because I've been considering following my music articles - most overrated bands and most disturbing songs - with most blasphemous songs and Dear God would definitely be on that list as would Blasphemous Rumors by Depeche Mode.

I say they just have blasphemy week as a theme week.

Meanwhile Television Without Pity's coverage - extra snarky as usual - is now up on this episode.

It wasn't Brook who sang the Lee Greenwood song, but Kristy Lee Cook. I watched that and thought- that's one smart girl. She knows (or her parents) exactly who will vote for her.

Well, now that Carly is off, I s'pose I don't have to watch it anymore (not that I made a point). I'd watch an XTC night, tho... Throw in some Alphaville and 'Femmes, and I'm buying my ticket to watch live! 8-) Well, not really.

I stand corrected. Thanks.

You were watching it just for Carly? At this point I'm watching it just for David Cook and hoping that Paula or Randy will one day go a whole nite without butching the English language, be it words like "pitchy" and "rangey" or "Dawg"

Nothing can be worse than Randy's comment last year of "you put the yo factor in the blam!"

Wait... what?

I, too, am now watching for David Cook.

I think David Cook is alright. When I do watch, it's on tivo, and this is how it goes:

FF through singer intros, 30 secs of a song, FF to Simon. I do go back to listen to the whole performance if the critique is unusual. And with David Cook, the first run through of the song I don't usually like. Then Simon says, "brilliant", and I get that scooby doo "huh??" look on my face, and go back to listen.

I don't know... maybe I'm just getting too old for it now. Look what my 'achin' for Aiken' got me- nuttin.

    ;-)

I loved jc superstar, when I read the title.. I figured it was non christains being offended.
heck you'd think the jc superstars would have helped bring in younger people to Christianity

I think David A should have done a rockin version of Don't Cry for Me Argentina
and then we'd get to see how big the Argentinian lobby was.

Off to go add a new question suggestion for the call in portion, namely

Should a singer be cut because of the bad decision/recommendation of a mentor?

I had a similar thought a few weeks ago when Mariah Carey seemed to imply that she advised Carly to stick to a more limited vocal range for the Mariah week, then all the feedback from the judges was that Carley has greater range than that and should have expressed it.

Watching Jesus Christ Superstar on TV at age 5 or so is one of my earliest memories. We watched it again in religion class at the Catholic High School I attended. I've (facetiously) dreamed of doing a one-man version of the show, singing all the parts.

As for how Jesus is portrayed, where's "The Passion" if Jesus has no inner conflict?

I love JCS, saw it when it came to Boston with most of the original cast and own the CD and listened to it too many times to count and never got the impression it hinted at a sexual relationship between Jesus and Mary M. She sings "I Don't Know to Love Him" as a woman who loves a man in a way that isn't reciprocated (sp). In the song she says "Yet, if he said he loves me I'd be lost, I'd be frightened." which I always took to mean that she doesn't know if Jesus loves her in the same way.

JCS tells the story of the end of Jesus' life very well and it is pretty close to the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, IMO. If her singing Superstar is the reason she got voted of, I think that it's shame people are still so ignorant. I really detest these so called Christians that get their panties in a bunch over something they consider offensive, yet they never read or see what their so riled up about. The whole hoopla over Harry Potter is an example of this.

People need to get a life. There's nothing wrong with the song she sang. It's not anti-Christian. If people stopped jumping to conclusions long enough and listen, they'd realized that.

Before we all get a little crazy--- remember the Chris Daughtry elimination. She is probably moving on to bigger and better things; cause she can sing her butt off. I don't think we've seen the last of her, and after all Simon liked her from the beginning.
