RIP Charlton Heston.

While i'm no fan of the NRA I thought Michael Moore's treatment of him was awful

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Heston aroused great anger from the political left. Filmmaker Michael Moore's Oscar-winning "Bowling for Columbine" (2002) tried to show Heston as callous toward shooting victims. Moore's treatment of the visibly frail actor and what some reviewers contended were flawed facts may have backfired.

Al Gore told the New Yorker magazine, "I really appreciate what [Moore was] trying to do, but I wouldn't have thought before seeing the movie that anyone could have aroused any sympathy in me for Charlton Heston. And yet he did."

Heston stepped down from the NRA presidency in 2003. The same year, President George W. Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, for his accomplishments in movies and politics.

Heston repeatedly declined to run for elective office. "I've been President of the United States three times," he told the Chicago Tribune, citing his film parts. "And Chancellor of England, and I ran the French government. And I led the Jews out of Egypt. What more could I want?

Heston was a magnificent actor and send very powerful messages in that role. He did carry my view as far as gun control was concerned and he did a lot to educate the public on the fact that guns do not kill people kill.

It is my heartfelt belief that if someone wants to kill the weapon is immaterial, a ball bat, a knife, poison all are weapons of murder, but we have not campaign to take these away from the public. Think about it.

It is a fact that the criminal element has guns, but if you take them away from the everyday guy and gal they will still have guns. Chaos will ensue, look at the way that crime decreased when Florida allowed persons to carry.

Personally I like Chris Rock's theory that we should charge huge fees for bullets because then, sure, people will have their guns but will be more selective about who they shoot and how often.

He explains his theory in

That will not keep these out of the hands of the criminals. The criminals in this country out gun our cops. What is wrong with this picture. They will arm themselves regardless and the general public will be at their mercy. Not my way of thinking that a country should be ran.

My last comment is look what happened to Germany when Hitler disarmed the citizens. No me thank you.

OK, you can pry his gun from his cold, dead hands now. Quick, before rigor mortis sets in and he starts spraying the funeral home with bullets!

Now that's quite an image.

And I don't think Michael Moore was overly harsh. Mr. Heston stepped right into it, but I'll grant you that he was a senior and frail.

I think Moore's questioning of him was ok but badgering the frail old man was a bit of a stunt, the kind of thing which makes some love to hate Moore, as I talk about a bit here.
