Reporting Live From the Pittsburgh Backgammon Tournament

Lucky duck wasn't too lucky.

Does this look like a champion backgammon player or a student of the month?

advertisement

Written Saturday morning: I've been playing backgammon for years. For the last five years or so I've been playing it online, often the last thing I do before I go to bed. It helps me relax and while I started out treating it as mindless fun to help my brain take time off before going to sleep, tournaments like these remind me that it's a much more intellectual game than it first appears... or at least compared to how it's played by most people. At tournaments it's all about the cubes. More about that later.

Right now I'm jumping online at two computers at the hotel where the tournament is being held so I can't stay online too long. Besides one of the many internationally known players participating here is going to give a free lecture for novices I want to hear.

There are tournaments for novices and for those with more skills. I'm a novice. They also have quickies and microblitzes, where you pay $20 or $30 to get in but if you win you win a few hundred bucks. How exactly this is legal I'm not completely sure. I just knew that I spent $50 yesterday to do one quickie and one blitz and quickly lost both times. So I have a lot to learn still.

One year ago today I came to my first tournament and quickly was eliminated. But I was fascinated by what I saw here, a whole another world, a fascinating subculture of people whose lives essentially revolve about backgammon. If you read Word Freak (which I suggest you do), or see the documentary Word Wars, you'll see there's a similar subculture for scrabble. And Wordplay talks about those obsessed with crossword puzzles.

So, yes, my name is Scott and I'm a backgammon freak.

At first I thought I'd just come here and play and observe and learn. But when I saw they had computer access I decided to treat this also as sort of a sociological experiment - I find these people fascinating. What makes them tick? They all have different strategies, though many share beliefs that calculations matter most (they are constantly figuring out the odds of this or that happening). One chastised me for conceding a game saying I could have won - I just would have needed double sixes three times in the next four rolls. So, yeah, sometimes they know the odds are long but still think one should go for it. Most seem nice especially when I tell them I'm new (if they say, "Is this your first tourney?" I lie a little and say yes, hoping - and getting - extra patience and advice."

One told me, "You are too conservative." I laughed and he blanched but I didn't explain that there are many here at Newsvine who think I'm too liberal. But I knew what he meant, too conservative in my game play.

You know how in poker some play with sunglasses on and some listen to headphones and you have to wonder if that's all just for themselves or also too psyche out their opponents? The same is true here. I seem to recall one guy last year dressed like a monk.

There's usually a few who stop to photograph each interesting move. Several listen to headphones. Some refuse to talk, some won't stop talking. A few are from Russia and speak little English and when I start thinking, "Wow, you are either really good or really cocky to come play here" that leads to madness and defeat.

So being a fan of fowl fun I brought my own secret weapon. Hopefully this will serve as my lucky charm. I plan to set him by the board for all games starting today. If if amuses me and distracts the opponent then I will be a happy guy.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The novice tournament starts at 1.

I'll check back later to respond to questions and will post more this evening.

I used to play at sites like Gamespy but I realized it was hurting my game because most games there were just one point games when the tricky part about tourneys is that they go to 7 or 9 or 15 points or more and it's all about the cube.

When I came last year I realized many played at Games Grid which had the benefit of not only having some of the top world players participating but also bots that you could play at at various skill levels. But it cost money. And it closed in recent months.

So one thing I'm trying to determine this weekend is where I should go to play next. I'm hoping others will drop by and maybe some of us can play together online sometime.

Also I've just found out there's going to be a "first annual" (a phrase prohibited in many newspapers) tournament in MD in October. Woo hoo!

Just met "the heat" from Games Grid who said "Scott, you're always falling asleep when we play!!" Now I feel bad. He's also trying to figure out where to play next online. I want to play more now but definitey not as i'm going to bed because that was just embarrassing. The problem with playing it before I go to bed - especially if I take my lorazepam (my anti-anxiety/anti-depressant) is I get relaxed and fall asleep and that's just plain rude and embarrassing.

Last nite, before I fell asleep exhausted, I joined a site called Net Gammon. http://www.netgammon.com/index.asp
It looks to be like GamesGrid, which is where I migrated to after the first tourney, after realizing that's where a lot of the good players play, plus it's free.

I'd love to play others from Newsvine or teach some how to play.

Hey, I'm looking for a game I can get so I can play against a computer and improve my game while off-line. Due to my job I'm offline a lot.

        Which is what I did.

The harder part is when you cube them first and then you get in a jam and they cube YOU and you have to accept a loss of two points. Not doing so cost me one of my losses. Not a game for those with low self-esteem.

One guy I saw had a sign that said "no whining."

"Is that for your opponent? How subtle!" I said.

No, man, it's for me, he said.

I just sat through a tutorial of sorts by Larry, who is one of the world's best. He's featured in this story which provides a good overview of tourneys.

I learned there's a great program you can use to play against a computer and it will calculate the odds, what moves are best, etc. The down side is it's amost $400. There's also a web site where you can do the same thing for free but if you have limited net access that's not as good.

Anyway Larry gave some good advice.

This is the flyer for the event I'm at

If nothing else it's nice to have an unlimited supply of chocolate, drinks (yes, green tea and/or soda) and as many games as I want to watch. I've quickly learned it's cheaper to watch than to play.

I'll save my money for those matches - and there are some each day - restricted to novice players.

          Well, I'm checking in.

I lost my first tourney match to a woman named Julie from the New York area. I won the second match against a young man.

It was funny because when I played last nite I was told I was too conservative in my game play. Well, TJ was even more conservative than me which is why I eventually - when I was beating him 5-0 - told him he needed to start playing more aggressively if he wanted a chance at all. He did eventually get it up to 6-5 before I finished him off. It was sorta odd because he was more nervous and timid in his moves than I was.

Since these matches go to 7 points it takes about one hour minimum per opponent.

They close the tourney down from 5 to 7 to insist everyone take a dinner break and it gives staff a needed break. So I'm gonna go eat.

Oh and I never thought I'd be saying this but I've been turning down chocolate and green tea! I've had so much I think my blood is now green or black.

I've been thinking about the game's appeal. To me. the game is like a battle between logic and creativity. The logic part is figuring out the odds of various rolls. The good players know instantly the odds of various rolls just as good scrabble players know 300 words starting with a J. But there's part of me that rebels against letting statistics mandate my every move and that's the part of me screaming out for me to do something unpredicatable and surprising. However what I'm finding is being unpredictable may be more fun but it doesn't help you win games.

I just had the best dinner, a meatloaf with bacon wrapped around it. Yum.

Ok, I'm heading back to the games. Wish me luck!

There's only two computers for the whole hotel and more than 100 people in the tourney. I don't normally log out of Newsvine because I normally don't share computers. So someone must have sat down and looked at what was on the screen before them and read it and posted a comment. I just wish I knew who it was.

Well, I've been eliminated. Last year I lost to three players - I think I beat one person - and was eliminated. This year I beat two people before I lost to three. So I'm doing better. Also this time I lasted for about 12 hours whereas last time I lasted for about five hours.

          I've definitely improved.

My lucky duck didn't seem to help much and only one person remarked upon him.

Unintentionally I found another possible distraction but I think it distracted me more than anyone else, namely my zipper. I have a pair of jeans with a slight problem - a hole in the crotch area. So even though it was zipped up it looks like it's unzipped. So I came trying to stretch my shirt over my crotch or wear a long sleeve shirt untucked but I'm sure at least one person thought I was walking around with my pants unzipped.

Not sure if that helped or hurt my game.

And with that I'm signing out for the night.

Tomorrow I may play a few more games in a mini amateur tournament.

One last thought to leave you with: So they have these matches which they call quickies (because it's the first person to two points instead of the usual seven or nine points - or 15 for the really good players.

Anyway it's a bit surreal to hear every 20 minutes for hours: "Who wants a quickie? Only $20 for a quickie"? and just when this is becoming less funny and weird because you hear it so many times you get a twist like when announcer guy said, "We have one guy who realllly wants a quickie. Just $20 and you can get a quickie with him"? to which I said, "Maybe he'd have more luck if he offered more money than $20."

          Say good nite, gracie

Sunday morning: Tired (didn't get much sleep) but reporting in. Today I plan to watch the champions and try to learn from them.

There is an amateur tournament I'm debating entering. I hesitate because of the $100 entry fee but it's more logical to enter than then do the $20 quickies - I did one late last nite (boy does that sound naughty) and was, er, beat, by an aggressive older woman (paging Mrs. Robinson?)
Anyway the "quickie" was even quicker than usual.

Man, if you didn't know i was talking about backgammon one would think Satan above (in his post, not his geographical or biblical location) was right about me.

By this point I've played at least 60 games this weekend.

The age range here is amazing. Some of the best players are in their 60s and 70s. But there's a whiz kid who is 10 who is undefeated in the novice division. They let him quit at 10 pm since it was past his bedtime. Has to be a bit intimidating to lose to someone that age.

The 10-year-old I mentioned? I spoke briefly to his father. His son has been playing in tourneys since he was 7. Lyle, of Chicago, came in second place in the amateur division (which means he has to move up to advanced next year) and won $175. His mom told me, no, he does NOT get to keep the winnings himself. Seems like a good kid. Took a few photos of him with my camera which I'll post when I get home tonite.

I was just waiting for Lyle and one or two other kids to get off the computers so I can post this and then hit the road for the four plus hour trip home.

Then an employee kicked them off saying they needed to be accompanied by an adult, her having no idea that Lyle was carrying $150 in his pants and had just proved him more mature - in some respects - then many of the hotel guests.

Scott said to give everyone this update! Lyles and his mom both won, mom was the overall winner, apparently dad is the only one who went home empty handed!

What categories did you want, Phyllis? The amateur championship is finishing up now - it's a nice lady who beat me (but whose mom is organizing the first md tournmament in October) vesus another woman who is good. Damn I'm bad at names -I remember faces better.

Anyway if you live near the tourney or near me - i'm in Md - then come to the MD tourney so we can play and meet face to face.

Speaking of MD the first two guys I met from any tourneys - who run the Bethesda, MD backgammon league, which plays monthly - just won the doubles tournament. So that's like a gammon version of a contact high?

                more details soon

                  Ok, here are some results:

                  For championship level:
Jon Vieter is the one who had a great upset over Ray Fulgerland (apologies for any mispellings)

                  Howard Markowitz won last chance

For amateurs it's Kim Messina vs Suzy Hathaway. Messina is from the Baltmore area so i'll be seeing her again at her mom's tourney. They are playing their final matches now - it's 5-5 in a 7 point match.

Suzy Hathaway and her husband got second for limited doubles - first place went to Barry Silliman and Gordon of the DC area.

Unlimited doubles was won by Jon Vieter and Greg Merriman.

And with that - and a photo added above - i'm outta here and headed for the road.

hey Scott, I love the fact that this tourny is getting some hype. Not that it needs any.. It is one of the biggest in the world.

By the way, you referred to the amateur championship, and I think you meant the novice championsip.

The amatuer would normally be considered the advanced (middle) division.

By the way, there is a monthly tournament (third Sunday of every month at Panera's in Wexford) that I run.

It is a good place for beginners.. Just 10 dollars for novice players (25 for others).
anyone interested can call John at 724-991-8725

                    take care

Ah, yes, thanks. My brain turned to mush and I forget that. That was one of my pet peeves, though. The novice division should be for novices, right? But those I played had been playing in tourneys from anywhere from 3-5 years to one who has been playing for 20 plus years. Now how can you be a novice if you've been playing that long?

hey Scott, nice postings. for the record, what you referred to as the amateur championship would typically be considered the novice championship, as amateur usually refers to the middle (or advanced) division.

but nice to see you giving backgammon some hype.

there is a monthly tourny with a small entry fee (novices/beginners pay only 10 dollars) for anybody interested the third Sunday of every month at Panera's in Wexford.

reporting in from this backgammont tournament:

Oh and, yes, I am on wireless at tourney via adjacent Towson University. So I'm taking advantage of that fact between matches.

There about 90 people here, so it's smaller than the Pittsbugh ones I attended for two years. so this is my third tourney but i'm clueless and out of my element and asking myself often "what am i doing here?" The answer is challenging myself and learning and exploring new things

Backgammon geeks are a special breed. Many have memorized all statistics on every roll and move (i.e. exact odds of getting a roll they need) and when they don't will take a photo to study and examine later. They have way more patience and concentration than I do. Against them I feel like I must be ADD.

My biggest failing in backgammon is I get bored doing the easy predictable move - if you always do the logical move then you are just acting like a robot or a computer.. but then you lose because often the predictable move is the right move.
I attend backgammon tournaments which I guess makes me a freak That said I'm not as much of a freak as most of those here who are so geeky they make me look like (insert someone not geeky here) But I admit this is like saying I'm the least ugly of a group of ugly ducklings or the best smelling skunk

Some of the people here were also at the Pittsbugh, some were not.

I'm in the novice division and most of those faces are new.

It's the ones in the advanced and championship divisions that look familiar, some of those are among the best in the world and it's those people that I - and others - spend time watching and learning while comparing their moves to how you would have done those moves.

The good news is this backgammon tournament i am at this weekend in
baltimore is triple elimination the bad news is i just lost my first match. The opponent was 85 years old and I made the usual mistake I make in life, namely I was too nice. Being nice to her cause she was so old. But she was sharp as a tack before I knew it it was 6-0 in her favor. I won two and then she won the match.

I took a lunch break and then lost again.

So I could presumably be completely out by 5 or 6 pm.

Fortunately I came to learn not to win.

                                        Sounds like a motivational poster.......

Definitely more catchy than this one:

The main thing I have learned so far is that I must be more brutal and agressive or, to put it anoither way, be the anti-me.

that'd be a slogan for a therapy group
