Wanted: A Companion (Preferrably One With a Baby) For A Special Assignment in Baltimore, MD on Saturday

advertisement

Ok, I have an assignment on Saturday but I'd like an accomplice, preferrably someone with a baby. It's up to you whether to bring a baby along or just help me determine whether what we see would be a hit with their own kids.
While the child in me is still alive I do not actually have children.

The event is Baby Loves Disco. Details are here.

I'm writing this for Newsvine and will give you all appropriate credit. Or we can write separate reviews/accounts of the event. I'm flexible.

We have permission to take photos (I have my own camera and can take photos in between interviewing babies and parents) as well as to talk those present there.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I don't think anyone with babies is too likely to up and make a trek anywhere on short notice.

Are you on some product testing thingie???

I don't understand your question.

I've done a load of music interviews with Putunamayo artists. The same publicist for that is in charge of Baby Loves Disco, which is a national tour where kids rock out to, yes, disco. I was asked if I wanted to attend it and cover it and I said sure.

From the Web site:

Baby Loves Disco transforms Baltimore's hottest club into a child proof disco as children (6 months to 7 years) and parents looking for a break from the routine playground circuit let loose for an afternoon dance party featuring real music spun by DJ Adolf blending classic disco. Plus, bubble machines, a chill-out area, diaper changing stations, a full spread of healthy snacks AND optional cocktails for non-driving parents. Saturday afternoon is the new Saturday night in Baltimore. Come join us!

And this is the same club hosting the New York Dolls.

Alas, a much as the idea of being in a crowd of hundreds, maybe thousands of sniffling, crying children and their tired, exasperated parents seems like such a cool way to spend a Saturday afternoon, I'm averse to flying so unless you could teleport me, I couldn't get there. :D Good luck finding someone, though.

(And I'm being silly, don't take it personally. I'm a grandma, I love children.)

I love kids and one thing I like about them is they don't have the inhibitions adults have about, say, dancing or being goofy. I can see myself having a blast but then forgetting i'm supposed to be "working"

See, you gotta bring this stuff up sooner. I have kids, and am already going to be in Baltimore on Saturday night, but we already have plans during the daytime.

Also, according to the website, it's sold out.

I made plans for it back in mid-November but it slipped my mind until a week ago when the publicist emailed to ask if I was ready to go.

Also, according to the website, it's sold out.

I'm on the waiting list and have arranged for 1.5 (as in 1 parent, 1 kid) to join me.

That wouldn't have worked anyway then, my girls get pretty mad if one of them goes off to do something without the other.

Understood. My two neices are the same way but I figured asking for more than two extra passes (one adult, one child) was pushing my luck.

It's ok - I can easily pull this off on my own. I just thought it'd be fun if someone else could to - sort of a Newsvine minivinemeet except with babies and disco.

Oh that sounds like fun. My kids love music and I would have loved to take them, but we already have plans for the weekend. Put I'm looking to reading your review and seeing the pictures.

    Thanks.

I'm keeping my mind open about how I'm going to cover this - a review, an interview (kids and babies being an impossibly hard interview unless you want one or two word answes) a happening or what.

Give it time. It's expanding fast.

It was a real blast. Lots of good fun, lots of great quotes, a bunch of (hopefully) good photos.

and this was their slogan for the event which was Saturday afternoon:

Saturday afternoon is the new Saturday night.

Most surreal moment (and worst example of a reporter accidently becoming part of a story):
I'd left my camera bag on the stage and went to grab photos of people in the "chill-out area" - hula hoops, etc - and am interviewing a woman and her 1-year-old - when I look on stage and see the m.c. holding my camera bag.

Seems they decided to hold a "pimp my diaper bag" contest where parents were encouraged to put their diaper bags/backpacks on stage and the ugliest/bulkiest "nominee" would get a new bag. They thought my bag was a nominee. Akward! I was upstairs watching this happen downstairs and I didn't get sorted out quite what happend until much later. Just glad I didn't win a diaper bag!

I found myself on an angle with the photos that I hadn't even planned, namely how does this differ from most events at the Ram's Head. Let's see, instead of t-shirt sales they are selling environmentally friendly diapers. Instead of lighters and beers people were holding scarves and shakers, instead of food on tables there those little juice boxes. if you needed to chill out there were pup tents upstairs.
