excerpt:"BEIJING, Feb. 1 -- Hu Jia, an online human rights activist detained last month, has been formally charged with inciting subversion against the Chinese government, human rights groups reported Friday.
The charge means Hu, 34, can be kept in prison for months while prosecutors mount a case against him for presentation to judges, who will then decide whether a trial is justified, human rights activists said. In the meantime, Hu's wife, Zeng Jinyan, and their infant daughter, Qianci, have been confined to their apartment without access to telephone or Internet communications.
Hu's detention was seen as part of a general crackdown on public criticism in the lead-up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics in August. In recent months, the Communist Party has tightened controls over the Internet and jailed several activists."
Lovely. China is proving once again how bad its human rights record is. There's a good editorial about this here.

Quite a few, I assume. So you can see why I did a doubletake at this statement by a chinese mystery writer i'm interviewing:
"Changes have also occurred in China's political climate. The country is more open. People no longer fear of being sent to prison for speaking of their dismay towards the government and the Party."
So I pressed her on it.
