Newsvine Week And A Half In Review, Jan. 6-16; Twelve Articles I Think You Should Check Out

advertisement

Starting last week I made good on my New Year's resolution to start to write a list on a regular basis of the best articles I've read written by other Newsviners. The idea here is simple: Shine my virtual flashlight onto some of the other stellar writers at Newsine, some of them better known than others.

I was going to do this list twice-monthly but I read so many good articles in the last few days that I decided to do another one this week. So please give these other articles a read. Thanks.

Before I begin this week's list I want to thank Scott Isaacs for help with this. Us Scotts need to stick together. Thanks again, Scott.

As I said last time, there's no way I can be everywhere and can read everything so if you see an article that knocks you out feel free to email me a link and I'll come check it out.

Similarly, if you don't see something you wrote listed that is probably not a snub so much as that I just didn't see it. Another good way to make sure I see it is to clip it to Newsviner's Picks, a group I set up specifically to showcase some of the best writing I read at Newsvine.

This week's list, in no particular order:
1. Lessons Learned From a Dying Doe by A. T. Garcia. This is the kind of writing I love. This is why I set up the personal narratives group, for excellent reflection pieces like this. Read this – it's a gem – but have Kleenex nearby.

2.Brett's a daddy!Read his initial impressions upon the birth of his daughter

3.Celestina, working with Walt D, began a series of reviews of alcoholic beverages. If you're like me (and god help you if you are) one of your first thoughts is, "Can I volunteer to help with the next experiment?" Check out their first Cheap Booze Review

4.Robert Blevins - AB of Seattle provided the best excuse ever for not having written an article in a week: he was in jail. Not only does he tell the story of his problems with law enforcement but he even supplies cartoons. Come read about his adventures, where you don't know whether to laugh or shake your fist (I did both.)

5. Newsflake did a great piece on what it's like being a new Newsviner, unsure what to make of the some of the in-fighting and divisivenes that I alluded to in last week's list. It was great both to read his impressions and to see others allay - or so I hope - his fears and concerns. Read "The newsvine minefield: reflections from a self-confessed naif

6. Snow in Iraq? It really happened. Rob, aka our man in Bhagdad, wrote about it in his latest Iraq tale.

7.Mykola is becoming quite the busy man, as he explains in his article about three projects he's working on. The most exciting of the three is that Nightly News with Brian Williams (my favorite of the three television news anchors and the most tech savvy) and Newsvine are now partnering on some discussion groups and Mykola is moderating some of the discussions. Meanwhile, he marked his second year anniversary here as I said there it's been a delight to get to know him.

8.The late night tv hosts are back and over at TV-Guide we're providing analysis and reviews. The best of the bunch so far is Scott Isaacs review on the first week back of the CBS shows. This week we're gathering forces to start reviewing American Idol - Vacelts did her duty last nite - and other programs like American Gladiators. Dr, Know also wrote a good review of the show

9.Ms. Cyprah continues to impress me with her thoughtful examination of issues. This week she wrote a piece on racism that I highly recommend: The Trouble With Racism

10. Melissa led a good discussion on the value of original articles versus seeding I think you can guess which side I came down on.

11. Stacy Malbon has the best piece I've read all year about Hillary: Hillary Clinton and the Vagina MenaceI couldn't help myself, nor could others, from taking her satire piece one step further.

12. There's nothing like watching a muckraker in action so when the New York Times did a piece on food allegies that steamed Pamela Drew she shot back with this rant this rant: Hatchet Job by the New York Times

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Honorable mention: My nominee for the most concise article of the week goes to Jeremy Wo Let him out of the greenhouse because I can not wait to see his second article. I emailed him to let him know that he's had more than 55 comments so far on his five word article.
My Cyprah wrote a fake interview with him while OK pondered the significance and true meaning of Jeremy's concise writing style: Newsvine Success = Brevity--The 5 Words of Jeromy Wo

Oh and I left one thing off. I've been interviewing an average of one Newsviner
every two weeks or so. Two weeks ago it was interviewing Pamela Drew to promote her
documentary and last week it was CartoonCat promoting her book, Planet Germany.

Don't we look like the creatively cultured, diverse community! I'll go out on a limb with a guess here for cartooncat and say, the starving artist in both of us, also appreciates the promotion!

Sorry, Scott. I deleted that one. In the end, I decided it was worth a view, but I just couldn't leave it up permenantly. One of three articles I've deleted at Newsvine, out of about 130. Nobody's perfect...

It's understandable. It's not exactly something you want to come up when future employers google you. I just know one day an employer will ask me about my plea about my genitals or my advice about Penthouse letters.

Pamela and Old Fogedy also did a good job this week with her article and his article urging us to get moving in using the new Nightly News forums.

I see no reason to view the Nightly News, this is a ploy to support NBC. I came to the Vine to avoid the MSM large corporation partyline, I refuse to support it.

    I refuse to support it.

    And that's your perogative.

of course, that does raise the question of whether Newsvine itself is now part of the MSM - whatever that means - since we're owned by MSNBC.

I have decided to take a shot at the Nightly Spews. There is very little response. I guess I will just have to get contrary a bit to stimulate something.

I predict Jeremy Wo will not only get his own group at Newsvine but might be the first to get a recurring series at MSNBC, both on the side and on the cable channel. I'm hoping this will happen in time for him to ask questions at the next presidentia debate, i.e. "this is my first question."

Ditto to that Scott and I'm so very glad you did this. But I was shocked to learn there really is some substance to the rumored conspiracy theory.

Us Scotts need to stick together.

Plus I never knew about the Newsvine Picks, or if I did it was lost from memory. That gives me a lot more great writing I may have missed in front of me and a new place beside my column to clip to!

Poll - What do you think Jeremy Wo will write for his second article:

    a) This is my second article

    b) What the hell is going on? I write one article and at least five people have mentioned me in articles?

    c) Am I out of the greenhouse yet?

    d) As I was saying before I hit publish accidently, my name is Bill Gates and this is my first foray onto Newsvine.

    -----------
My personal theory is that Jeremy was at Newsvine as part of a class, perhaps through a private group, and their first assignment was to write an article. Which prompts the question: what grade did he get for that assignment?
