What Cool Gifts Did You Receive? Did You Get Anything We Can Share With Our Newsviners Serving Overseas?

advertisement

Most of my Christmas gifts this year were clothes, candy or money.

But there was one exception and that is what sparked the idea for this article.

While I think the war on Iraq is a mess and the troops should be sent home, I do also respect
the soliders there, especially those at Newsvine who take the time to explain the situations
and opinions.

That is one reason I was excited recently to interview newsvine/soldier Rob and to get, in recent weeks, a commitment from his roommate to let me interview him too.

So.... While the present I received is cool (more on that in a minute) I think I'm going to send it to Rob and Jneal with a special request (more on that in a minute as well.)

I know there have been similar worthy efforts to help these guys but I think it's worth doing it again.

So my question to you is this: Did you get anything good you would be comfortable passing on to these guys?

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

OK, I'll start.

My mom bought me this book: Doonesbury.com's The Sandbox: Dispatches from Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, which has been on my Amazon Wish List for a while. While Doonesbury and its author have often been labeled as liberal Trudeau, the author, has done more work advocating for troops than many conservative writers.
This interview at Military.com discusses some of that but essentially by having a major character, B.D. serve in the war, get injured, go to Walter Reed, Trudeau has been able to explore issues many soliders say is not normally reflected accurately in the media - i.e. what life is really like serving in Iraq and, more so, what it's like to be a vet trying to return to life in the U.S.

His books about that are excellent and poignant. If he'd stopped there it would have been interesting and impressive but only part of the picture.

What he did next impressed me more - he traded on the popularity of his name and series and his web site to ask soliders to share their dispatches of what their life was/is like serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This book is a compilation of those dispatches.
Now I can read that and record my thoughts. But what, I think, would be so much better is the following:

Rob and Jnealis, Your mission, should you accept it, is for you two (either individually or collectively) to review this book for Newsvine. You can use this to share some of your own stories which I'm pleased to see you already doing. Or you can use it to show what those writing got right and/or got wrong.

I was previously thinking of asking you to share your list of best and worst war movies and books but that's probably too easy and cliched. So instead how about I mail you this book and you two write up a review of it? I'll also send the Doonesbury books in question.

I've been encouraging Newsviners to write reviews for a while via the Review Cafe and give away extra books I receive for others to review - and if we keep cranking out good reviews publishers are noticing and will provide us more books, more access for interviews, etc.

So... I just emailed the two and we'll see what they say. What else can we send our budding war correspondents?

Thanks to Mark the Muse for helping inspire this idea with this letter

Incidentally, this has been a wacky day. This morning, before leaving to go to the San Diego Wild Animal Park (it was my first time so I asked my nieces (3 1/2 and 5) to keep me safe from the animals (not knowing at that point about the tiger attack at the S.F. zoo), I suggested, half in jest, a Newsvine zoo story. I then went off-line for 10 hours. While on the way to the zoo I decided to do what I just wrote above and wrote it out in longhand while crunched in the backseat between two girls in car seats asking if I'd pretend to be a prince so they could marry me (since they are princesses)

Anyway the cool gift I received which captured my attention today was a pedometer. I know I don't exercise enough but I like to think that since I walk a lot I might get enough exercise that way. I saw on a tv news health segment that a good healthy xmas present is a pedometer so one can see if they do the doctor-recommended 10,000 steps a day. So I requested and received that.

And today was the first test drive of that. I wondered if all that walking around this zoo would equal 10,000 steps. And the answer is... it depends what pedometer you're wearing.

Wha-?
My pedometer by Omron asked me my height and weight but did not, unlike my mom's, measure my stride.
That pedometer said I walked 9,777 steps today. So close! But mom also has a pedometer and it said she walked 12,000 steps. Hers is by the same company but hers measures her stride. We're about the same height (she's 5 10 and I'm 6 foot) and we walked the same places. (though now I'm wondering if she takes smaller strides than I.)

I think the difference, and we spent way too much time trying to figure this out (probably to the consternation of other family members) is that my odemeter doesn't count steps that it considers shuffling or inconsistent. So when waiting for what seemed like an hour for a tram ride we were in line and moved slowly and my pedometer counted 10 step for the hour. Hers counted many more.

It's all sort of pointless - the important thing is to exercise regardless of what this device says - but somewhat intriguing nonetheless

p.s. someone send Rob and J. a pedometer:)

Great. You guys know how to share, right?

There is a bit of irony - and postage- involved in mailing to U.S. troops in Iraq a book written by, well, U.S. troops in Iraq.

The book lists the name and email address of the editor for the book and the site. I circled it in the book. You two might also want to see if you can do an interview with him. If dropping my name helps feel free - I've done prior interviews with authors from the same publisher.

Rob and Josh, I have a second part to the assignment. I received a book that I think would interest you too – it's called Reporting Iraq: An Oral History of The War By Those Who Covered It. It's put out by Columbia Journalism Review. I have an interview lined up with one of the editors.

But once I read it and do the interview – that should take about a month – would you two like to read and review it?
