My Interview With Newsviner Vacelts About Heroes

advertisement

From time to time I like to interview other Newsviners, asking them questions I figure are on the minds of other Newsviners besides just me. I did so with Walt D, Rob and Dennis.

Normally I interview authors and musicians. I recently decided to interview a doctor who writes recaps of House. That reminded me we have a Newsviner who writes popular recaps of Heroes, a show I've just started getting into in recent months. (Yes, I'm about one year beyond most people.)

I'd interview Steve Watts but I've yet to get into that show and try to at least be somewhat knowledgeable about the topics on which I write.

So here then is my interview with Vacelts followed by her picks of some of her favorite musings about Heroes and other topics

Do you consider yourself a fan of Heroes?

Yes, I consider myself a fan of Heroes. I know I sometimes come across as critical in my recaps, but mostly that's to stir up discussion.

Did you start watching it from the beginning?

Yes, I've been watching Heroes from the beginning. It is one of the shows I normally watch as it airs, but there has been the rare occassion where I've had to DVR it and watch it at a later date.

At that point what were your expectations from it?

When I first started watching Heroes, I wasn't yet blogging. (I didn't start blogging until last March.) In the beginning, my only expectation was to be entertained. I had no idea that it would become this serialized drama that I would spend time theorizing and analyzing on the web.

The series Lost was my first experience with a television show that, after watching, I would spend time discussing on the web. Sure, I'd discussed shows with friends and coworkers in the past, but nothing as in depth as the discussion on Lost and, now, Heroes.

At what point did you start writing episode recaps and analysis?

I wrote about Heroes for the first time in an article on the Top 10 Season Finales that I was looking forward to last spring. Then I
followed it up with a recap on the season finale.

Before that I was simply seeding other recaps of the series. I was inspired to start writing regular recaps of Heroes for Season 2 by Steve Watts. I really enjoyed the discussions that his recaps initiated about Lost and wanted to do something similar for Heroes.

Chandra W does a nice job of previews of upcoming episodes of Heroes, but there was no one regularly writing recaps for Heroes. And one of the fun things about a series like Heroes is hearing everyone's theories on what's going to happen next.

My goal with the recaps wasn't to become an authority on Heroes, but to initiate this dialogue.

The only down point of writing about the series is that I find myself being much more critical that if I just watch the show.

What do you consider the high points and low points so far?

For me, the high point of the series was the section of Volume 1 with the slogan "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World." The series was still new, we were still learning about the characters and we had all these theories about what was going to happen next.

The entire Volume 2 has been a low point for me. I'm not saying that there haven't been some outstanding episodes in this volume, but overall it just hasn't had held the same magic for me. It seems that they are still trying to spoon feed us at the same pace as the first season and I'm ready to move past that stage.

And in my opinion, the stories either aren't as well developed as in Season 1 or the commentors in my recaps are getting very good with their theories, because the big reveals have seemed anticlimatic this season.

What's it like having some of your recent articles - this one - featured at MSNBC?

I actually didn't get to see my article on MSNBC and only found out about it being posted there because of you, Scott.

It's an honor to have my recap picked up by MSNBC. I just hope that I'm representing the Newsvine community well. I actually think that the recap was of interest to MSNBC because of the discussion the commentors bring to it and not just my recap.

Do you plan to continue writing the recaps?

Yes, I plan to continue writing the recaps for Heroes when the series returns. In fact, it felt very weird not writing a recap this week. I'm going to have to come up with a way to fill the Heroes void in the meantime.

Do you read the recaps written by Television Without Pity or other sites?

I don't read any other recaps until I've written and posted my own. I don't want to be influenced by others until I've gotten my thoughts down. However, once my recap is posted I do read other recaps.

Everyone sees things differently and those recaps might reveal something I missed and can then add to the discussion.

I've not read Television Without Pity recaps before, but I am looking to checking them out. I regularly read TV Squad, Buddy TV, TV Addict and Heroes Revealed.

What other television series do you like?

I never really thought of myself as a Sci Fi kind of girl. But as I sit here and think about the other shows I watch, I think I'm going to have to reconsider that analysis.

My must watch show each week is Supernatural. I also watch Bones, Smallville, Chuck, Reaper, Friday Night Lights, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Numbers, Grey's Anatomy, Las Vegas, Pushing Daisies, Monk and Psych.

Over the summer, I got sucked into Mad Men, Burn Notice and Army Wives. And with twin toddlers in the house I watch more children's programs that you can image. In all, I watch far too much TV to be healthy. But it's cheap entertainment for a couple with little ones.

Thanks again for doing this interview.

Perhaps recaps of Sesame Street are on the horizon?

I tried recapping the Daily Show and Colbert Report which, on reflection, was one of the stupider things I've tried. I do recommend Television Without Pity which is notable because a) It's super snarky and b) Sometimes the recaps seem longer than the show's script but c) Can be quite funny.

I've been watching Buffy, Heroes and The Office via dvds from my library and always read TWOP recaps.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I asked her to list some of her favorite recaps, followed by some of her favorite Non-Heroes pieces:

Of course, please put in the article MSNBC picked up

And my latest article

This post had a personal connection to me, but it's also a message to others not to take today for granted.

This article was a fun way to look at a current event. And I've actually followed most of those steps so far. Let's see how upbeat I am about the strike after the new year.

I wrote this one before the rash of toy recalls, but given the number of recalls I thought it had a good resource for not yet parents, but all consumers.

Very nice interview, Scoop. And, thanks, vacelts. I wrote regular recaps during the first half of Heroes' first season but had to stop when I started blogging about television professionally (aka for a salary) elsewhere. I've only recently found the time to start focusing on the Heroes group here again, and I appreciate that vacelts has kept everyone current with the show on such a consistent and engaging basis. Her contributions have been a huge help in preventing the group from flickering out.

It's also interesting that vacelts has achieved such success after starting to blog fairly recently. The same was true for me when I joined Newsvine last year and had to decide what my column would focus on. Within months, I'd transformed my efforts at Newsvine and one other television-based social site into a legitimate professional opportunity. So, if anyone reading begins to think that the time spent contributing to Newsvine isn't worth it, know that all you have to do is pursue the wider options.

This is quite true.

And speaking of Heroes, which we sort of are,

there's a good seed by Chandra of an interview with the director about the writer's strike and other issues

I watched two more episodes last nite and tonite it's time to say so long I barely knew you to Eden

Well with weather storms forcing cancellation of church - and my scheduled discussion of
the movie Sicko today - I'm going to use some unexpected free time to watch a few more
episodes of season 1. Then once I finish season 1 I can start reading - and understanding -
Vacelts summaries of season 2 shows. (I've not yet read any of those because I didn't
want to spoil any season 1 surprises)

A few example of why I love Television Without Pity from its recap of a season 1 show:

a keeps cutting back to the glass gripped in Ted's hands, but...like, it's four ounces of boiling water. Okay, he boiled it with his mind, or whatever, but let's not all freak out like he's menacing Matt and Audrey with a cup of lava; this whole situation could be defused if only someone could bust out a sachet of Top Ramen.

Or this:

In Chandra's old office, Mohinder continues moving in -- taking down Chandra's map, rifling through his files, flipping through a wee notebook to the back cover, which has a key tucked into its flap. Even though Mohinder is generally on this quest to figure out what his father was on about, and specifically had just been applying force to try to open a locked desk drawer, his reaction to finding this key is to...tuck it back into the flap and go take a nap.

Literally -- he sits in the desk chair, and after a cursory glance at the monitor, his eyes quickly flutter closed, taking us on a trip down memory lane. First, let me just say, you know how excruciating it is when someone's like, "I have to tell you about this dream I had!" and even though all you want is to say, "Unless the dream was about me, I'm not interested," you have to suffer through it and pretend to be interested?

Recapping a dream is like that times a thousand, and here's this episode, packed to the gills with dreams. Okay, it could be worse, from a recapping perspective, but the problem with a dream sequence on TV is that you don't know what's going to end up being important later so you don't want to gloss over anything. On the other hand, the ones here seem mostly to be DreaMohinder projecting himself into actual events, as opposed to conjuring metaphorical situations where Chandra's Chandra but he has lobster claws for hands, and Mohinder's himself but he's played by Charles Durning.

So anyway, as DreaMohinder watches, Chandra and Mohinder argue, apparently about Chandra's plan to go to the U.S. Chandra's like, "You're not the boss of me," and Mohinder's like, "Daddy issues," and Chandra's like, "Get out of my grill," and Mohinder's like, "You look like a crackpot and everyone at the university is going to think I'm Crackpot Jr.," and Chandra's like, "My work is important enough that I can't bother caring whether you eat alone in the cafeteria," and Mohinder's like, "You are seriously crazy like that dude who wrote The Bell Curve and I can't keep telling people you're just 'exhausted and dehydrated,'" and Chandra's like, "No one asked you to, and I've gotta be me," and Mohinder's like, "You'll starve in America, where doctors drive cabs and hamburgers eat people, and also, don't leave me, Daddy!" and Chandra's like, "Thanks for not believing in me, dick," and Mohinder's like, "Does this remind you of that movie Quiz Show, but in reverse and with Indian people?" and then stomps off. Chandra looks sad….

Another fun one from Television Without Pity for the Six Months Ago episode or as I call it Exit Of Eden

father's choices? Sloppy writing! I think we have a new drinking game, people; every time there's sloppy writing or inconsistencies on the show, you have to drink. Good lord. We'll all be hammered by the first commercial break.

And it's not all funny stuff there's also stuff I would have missed like this

The surgeon enters and calls Nathan away from all the brother-touching. As Peter watches from behind sound-proof glass, Nathan gets the news that his wife is paralyzed. The doctor goes to touch Nathan on the shoulder, but since he's not Peter, Nathan slaps his hand away. He looks out at his brother, and it's a cool shot, because right behind Nathan's head is a light fixture that's basically a black disc over a light bulb, making it look like a total eclipse. That? Is some wicked fun the set decorator is having with the show, and now I'm wishing I'd paid more attention to previous episodes to find stuff like this.
