The report is finally out.
excerpt: "Dozens of current and former major league baseball players, including Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens, sluggers Mo Vaughn and Gary Sheffield and reliever Eric Gagne, are named as being linked to steroid use in the report.
Mitchell embarked on his multimillion-dollar task at the behest of Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, who felt a probe was necessary after reading "Game of Shadows."
I shared over at this seeded column two thoughts on this:
I was thinking today about how this whole
report feels a bit like the "naming names" bit from McCarthyism except this is, as far as I
can tell, apolitical. What really got my attention today was this thought: Think about how much time
was spent by so many debating whether or not Barry Bonds should have an asterix
next to his name and/or be allowed to enter the hall of fame, etc. That now seems so tiny a matter to what do you do with someone like Clemens (asterix next
to Cy Young winner lists) and others? What a cluster@!$%# for statisticians and writers of almanacs! And yes I think that's a sports term.
