I had contemplated asking Newsviners about their New Year's Resolution but a) the idea is a bit obvious and predictable b) most people I know don't even bother with resolutions and c) I've not decided what, if any, resolutions I myself will have yet. Last year's were to get better at chess and crosswords and I failed at both.

Then I had this idea: Let's make the resolutions about our use at Newsvine. We've all talked about how we'd like others to do things different - back away from flame wars, not troll - how about if I turn it around and make it a question about our Newsvine use.

And thus this idea was born.

So what ARE your resolutions for Newsvine Use in 2008? I've listed what I'd like to see from Newsvine for Christmas (and beyond) but what do you want to see from yourself? If you are like me, and god help you if you are, then you've said "I'll just read one more discussion than go to work" and the next thing you know you're fired because you, well, never showed up for work. So maybe if we document these goals, promises and resolutions it'll be interesting and, dare I say it, a community-building endeavor?

I once had a therapist give me advice which I condensed and repeated back to her this way: Find the things you like to do and do more of them. Determine the things you don't like to do and do less of them. The therapist pronounced me graduated from therapy and, I bet, now steals my quote. But I digress. So many people would be happier if they just followed that advice. You don't like reading discussions about athiesm so why read them? You're tired of trying to understand why it's ok for someone to act anti-semitic but it's not ok for someone to label that person AS anti-semitic? Then don't read it. (Or start a meta topic on that topic which will start productive and then become a huge flamefest.)

So here's my resolutions:

I resolve to try to do less of those things which probably irk others, namely: - I'll try to resist seeding more than 10 things in one day and ideally shoot for 5-7. Otherwise if I'm in your conversation tracker.. well, let's just say that I'd guess there are some who take me off their tracker precisely because I seed too much. Plus I don't want to add to the signal to noise ratio being askew.

- Promoting my material in other people's columns. It's a blurry line between "this piece is related" and "this piece seems, to me, related but to you it might not." I tend to the former argument but I'm going to move to the latter argument. If you listen closely you can hear some Newsviners breath a sigh of relief and consider - I hope - liking me again. The problem with me being so prolific is it's hard for me to enter a discussion and not be reminded of something related that I wrote. But I'm going to try to end the urge to say, "that reminds me of something I wrote..."

Instead I may just index some of my articles - like I did with my music seeds, and my books read and movies read, which I listed on my recommendation page - and seeds. Or if I want to share a link still I might email the author of the seed or article first. Sorry to those I've hurt by not being more tactful. The line between self-promotion, being helpful and link spamming is blurry indeed. I'll do better. If I don't I give you the right to forward me all your spam about your genitals. I do reserve the right to reference my own stuff within my own articles, such as I do with this piece.

I resolve to do more of these things which, I think, people here like: - I plan in 2008 to resume listing in article form the best articles of the week or month, shining the spotlight on others, trying extra hard to focus the attention on new less recognized writers. My latest effort to do something like that was here, where I suggested everyone share links to their favorite pieces.

- Possibly doing (or getting others to do or help with) a Newsvine week in review, where we can highlight notable revelations of the past week, such as a Newsviner having a baby or someone (ok, Noah) returning. The idea would be to provide the week in a nutshell for someone who didn't have time to read through everything. It would be sort of like this idea I shamelessly stoll from Lauhal where you'd ask, "What'd I miss this weekend?" if you happened to spend a few days off line.

- Continue pushing for innovative ways for us to share not only text but also photos, be it slide shows , sharing holiday decorations or what have you, and hoping others do it too.

- And attend the DC vine meet and July 4 vine meet and try this time to be more outgoing even though it's contradictory to my off-line personality.

Addendum:
The mentoring program will begin after the holidays. There are still some logistical issues to work out but I think this will be a great way to help new members as they join us. If you're interested in mentoring newsviners click here for more information. If you're brand new and need some immediate help, like a mentor today, feel free to email me.

Addendum: I am going to avoid seeding something unless I have something to add to it. Otherwise I, and others here who seed without much of a comment beyond "This is interesting," are nothing beyond a fancy clipping service.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I don't normally make resolutions. If anyone asks I generally say something like "Since no one actually follows through with these things, my resolution is to be dead at some point this year"......people call me morbid...BAH! :P

As for newsvine resolutions though, I'm going to be trying to get myself writing a lot more, I have a couple things planed that may end up being a regular series or 2, and just more writing in general. Now that I haven't been working so much the last little while I realized just how little I've been writing these days, by unfinished book has been practically untouched for months...and this just won't do!

Now I just have to actually follow through...so I probably shouldn't also make a resolution to be dead this time around....might be bad :P

I resolve to not get frustrated when Newsvine goes down but to instead do what I just did, namely work on other projects while hoping it comes back up before I go to work.

I resolve to get at least one answer right (and on time) in Rwarner's trivia game and to push her to have an afternoon edition of her game.:)

This is not going to be a definitive list here, but just off the top of my head I can think of a couple...
    1) One is to write more regularly. In other words, actually write something, not just say "I'm working on a piece on X" for a month...I look back and some months I hardly wrote ANYTHING, just seeded stuff. 2) Spend more time, on a regular basis, devoted to the care and feeding of Newsvine Friends. I have about given up on using the comment tracker for this, because it easily runs over 1200 most times and I can't possibly follow up on all that. So what I am going to do is just click on names from my friends list and check out their page, read whatever catches my eye, and try to make a substantive comment.
    3) Make some effort on comments. Not just make a joke, altho there is nothing wrong with that. But try to look up some factoid or link that will add something.
    4) Maybe do reviews of classic movies? This doesn't qualify as a resolution, because I'm not resolving to do this. But I love old movies, and try to catch a lot of them from the library now, or from cable in the near past. Not sure if the Vine is the right place for this, because I should do this sort of thing on a site devoted to just that one thing and get some ad revenue out of it.
    5) Try to locate some step by step directions on doing things on the Vine. Why can't I get a picture up? Why doesn't anyone in tech reply to me when I ask why?
    Wish me luck.

    Good luck.

re: #5 If you don't get help by this weekend I'll try to help you. Have you checked out the help files via Aine's group?

I'm not lucky at finding things in the Newsvine archive. I do a search like for any other article -- which I would think could pull up a story on the subject -- but nooo, nothing comes up.
I know Aine, of course. Can't think of group name right offhand.
    Have searched without success, OK?
    I would like a link.
There's another thing that NV could be better at -- stepping up with a tutorial of sorts for the new Viner, to walk them thru all the tricks of the trade, so to speak.

Are you using Vinestalk to search for stories? That's a billion times more helpful than the tag search.

There's another thing that NV could be better at -- stepping up with a tutorial of sorts for the new Viner, to walk them thru all the tricks of the trade, so to speak.

That's what I'm hoping the mentor program will do.

What I've suggested to Calvin - but I want to let Aine weigh in since she heads the Newsvine help group - is that when someone joins Newsvine they are automatically added to the Newsvine Help Group and Mentor Group so right away they see both a) this continuing open help thread which is the prefect place to ask questions like your photo and b) a mentor thread where I ask mentors to either post their questions or email (if they want more privacy) their questions to me or other mentors.
