New Fiction Writing Exercise: The Alphabet Soup Challenge

Ok, here is a good test of your writing abilities.

I want you to write something - it can be fact, fiction, memoir, whatever - but

each paragraph must start with the next letter in the alphabet.

Example:

Apples are my favorite.

Boy do I love apples. But apples can be problematic - one time I worked with a special needs adult adult who ate 10 apples in one day and the next day he was not well.

Can someone guess why he was not well?

Death warmed over is how he felt because nobody, until me, reminded him that all things are best in moderation.

Except maybe sex.

etc.

Man, I don't know -- why not make it difficult through employing a word a single letter longer in each successive paragraph?

I'm going to make this increasingly more difficult - this is just the easy first round.

Why not set up your exercise? If you build it they (including me) will come.

      As I posted to April:
Wow. I didn't expect one coherent complete story from A to Z but that's
      awesome.
I was thinking more a series of anecdotes but I like your approach better.

I'll make that the minimum everyone - including me if you want my
      participation - must do.

I'll try to do mine later today and (gasp! horror!) will try to do it without use of google.

Here's mine. It's a bit more disjointed, but then again... most of my prose is. The tough part was making it last for 26 paragraphs without boring myself, let alone my reader. Of course that's yet to be seen. ;)

Ok, I'm going to start a new topic for the next round.
If you haven't finished this round, that's ok - I'm not setting any time

I'm going to take a day off from writing and seeding so....

If you want to read some interesting pieces I'd love to get some feedback
on a few things I wrote this week:

Why Listening matters, especially for writers

about being a punker for a nite
          about how Hipaa affects journalists
and how NOT to talk to re-eanctors

Some thoughts on Lady Diana and the movie the Queen
          And
what am I doing in Hagerstown, MD?

          My bad advice on flirting

          A self-profile

And a new fiction writing exercise

Ok, the next Writing Down the Bones exercise is up here

and the next round of this Alphabet exercise is here.

It can be a personal narrative, it can be a work of fiction.

Well, I wrote something but I forgot it was supposed to be fiction and, well,
            that it shouldn't suck.

But I'll share if you don't mock me too much.
Alright, I'lll try this too. It's only fair since I asked others to do it.

            Besides, I'm a bit bored.

Crap. I can't think of anything creative or interesting.

            Dang, still nothing. No ideas.

Ever hear the one about the fiction writer who asked others to tell stories?

Funny thing is… well, there's nothing funny about this.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr, says Scott. Think, Scott, think.

Heck, I'll just make something up.

I suppose I could use this format to tell about my brother.

Jay, my brother, was a lifeguard.

Kinda crazy, my brother was.Well, still is.

            Little bitty loony.

Mad? Maybe. But he was my older brother so I idolized him.

Nite surfing? Yeah I'll never forget the time he told me the best time to go body surfing is at night when it's dark.

Ouch! Those waves did hurt as they splashed onto us.

Pity poor Scott who had fallen for another of his brother's pranks.

Quite sore I was the next day. Years later in an action I'm still not totally clear about I punched my brother in the face and knocked out a tooth. Other than the time I beat up a guy nicknamed Tuna for making fun of my last name it was the only act of violence I ever committed.

            Really.

            Sorry!

            This is quite

            Ugly.

Very poor example of a story.

            Writing? This? I think not?

X marks the spot where this story went downhill. Actually I'd say it went downhill at A.

You know, I'm tempted to delete this piece of crap but I'll leave it as an example of just how bad writing can be and therefore all will look at this and say: "What was the value of this piece of writing?

"Zilch!" That's the value. If I wasn't in charge of this here exercise I'd ask that this Scoop be barred from further writing but since I am he (and a folk singer is singing I am The Walrus as I type this) there's not much I can do.
