Newsvine's Second Movie Discussion: Dixie Chick's Shut Up And Sing

Wed Jun 20, 2007 11:16 PM EDT

The first movie discussion was on Jesus Camp. The discussion was here and the review was here.

This movie, the Dixie Chicks movie, is the second one.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to rent this movie and share your opinions be it with comments, a review, etc.

I saw the movie about a month ago and I'll rent it again and write up a review.

The discussion can start any time but my review won't come out until mid-July or so.

I like YOU Scoop, but I don't listen to the Dixie Chicks. Nice article though. I'll pass on watching the film, but go ahead and give this one a vote...(lol)

A slight change in plans - I'm going to do BOTH this discussion AND the
        Jonestown one.
If you want to wait a month to do the Jonestown I undestand. The Jonestown
one is now set up here.

I'll write up my own review of this documentary sometime in the next few weeks
to give those who can't get the movie a jumping off point plus it might make debate
more interesting. I'd encourage others this time to post their own reviews
        in addition to making comments.

I received this movie and the Jonestown movie today. I'll write reviews for both in the next week.

Who is going to join me in discussing these movies?

I'm writing up tonite a review of the Dixie Chicks documentary. Below are some comments and questions to spark discussion of the film. I will keep this discussion going through the end of the summer.

Was it right for Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines to say:
"Just so you know, we're on the good side with y'all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas."

Would it have mattered if her comments came while she was on American soil instead of in London?
        Why or why not?

Did your opinion of the band change because what Natalie said?

What do you think it means that they won Grammy awards - despite the continuing criticism of them – for their latest album which contains a song responding to the death threats?

Personally, I like the Dixie Chicks and listen to their music.

I haven't read anything on Blogcritics.

However, I didn't find this "documentary" to be much more than an extended promotion for their most recent album.

I've always thought the reaction to Natalie's comments was crazy extreme, but the U.S. is full of irrational people willing to protest the irrelevant issues while standing apathetic to the important ones. Anyone who has the energy to spew as much hate as those who protested the D.Cs, should spend a little time educating themselves on the issues: very few things are black and white.

If you don't like a performer's opinions, don't buy their music and don't listen. Protest is fine, but sending hate mail? Damn. Is it worth hating people for one opinion backed up with little to no action?

In retrospect, it's easy to see that our President has bitten off more than WE can chew in this invasion of Iraq, which has made some of this Dixie-Chick hate fade away; however, I wonder how the Dixie Chicks would be faring if everything in Iraq had been as smooth as Bush led us to believe.

I like the fact that these women stood together and stood up for themselves. I think their manager is brilliant, and they are pretty smart too.

I agree it does come off as quite self-promotional.

Whether this is a free speech issue or not is debatable. I first framed it as such but I think it's more about censorship by way of radio companies. It's complicated. Thanks for your thoughts, Rob.

I'm headed right now to lead the discussion of this at my church. Actually
it's not until 3 but I like to go early and sit and read because it's a relaxing,
peaceful place to read. Plus I can make sure I don't get locked out of my own
                discussion.

The discussion of this movie at Blogcritics remains intense, quite the opposite of the one here.

We had the church discussin of this movie today. It was good but we only had to people show up.

I'm clipping this to the Unitarian Universalist group, as it is at a UU church where I show these movies at and lead the discussions.

The September movie will be Dust and Deceit - the discussion will be here - and the October movie is Out of Balance, about how Exxon has manipulated the media re: climate change. Details here.
