Fiction: The Door

Some made fun of him. He knew they did.

Oh, he's just a door, they said. He knew they did.

But that was so unfair. It was enough to make a door like him stand ajar.

What people didn't realize was how hard his job was. They just saw a door as something they went through. Who
actually stops and thinks about things like...

how much abuse he puts up with. When people are mad they slam him. Man, that smarts. And when they kick him, he is tempted to just hit them back.

And he did once and when the person turned around - shocked - he almost laughed aloud when the guy's companion said, "Oh, i'm sure that was just the wind that did that."

But he couldn't laugh. That would be conduct unbecoming of a door and he would be demoted to a drawer.

There were some parts of his job that made up for the work, though.

Like when the cleaning lady came around and sprayed wd40 into his private areas. Man, did that feel good.

He wanted to propose to her when she did that.

But he didn't.

That would just be too weird.

Besides there was that desk nearby who had been whispering sweet things to him.

It was something to think about, at least until another human came by.

This was an abstract piece that came from a Writing Down the Bones exercise.

I later wrote a sequel of sorts.

Oh, I really liked this. Of course I'm moving on to the sequel now.

Does he get it on with the desk?

You ever heard of that band the Doors? They only wish they had as much sex as
      this door.
