How To Sleep Past Noon

News Type: Other — Thu Mar 1, 2007 6:35 PM EST

By Scott (Scoop) Butki

I gave a much shorter version of these lessons while a shy high school junior in a required speech class. The assignment was to go on a stage and demonstrate how to do something. I could not talk loud, I spoke too fast, and I had a teacher who would make me give a speech twice if the first one wasn't adequate. In short, life was hell.

I figured sleep is something I know how to do and besides, there was a couch on the stage. So I made a few comments and took a short nap — right there, in front of everyone.

I only got a B and the nap was of low quality, but I think it was one of my finer pieces of performance art and rebellion. My life has been a series of weird acts ever since.

This is a lesson by late-sleeping slumber-loving Scott.

There are some life habits that people just don't talk about in today's society. Today, I'm going to break that wall of silence. I'm talking, of course, about sleep habits, and specifically how one can sleep longer than the average human.

First, be tired. That's important.

Second, drink a little before going to bed. Not alcohol, because that affects the quality of your sleep. And not too much drink, or you'll have to get up at 4 a.m. to deal with it.

Third, keep a bottle of water near your bed. That way, if you awaken at, say, 10 a.m., you just reach for the bottle and drink without leaving the bed. If you get hungry while you sleep, keep a granola bar there, too.

Fourth, keep an electric fan in the room. That way, if neighbors are loud, you can create white noise to block them out by walking only two feet from your bed.

Fifth, keep boring, sleep-inducing reading material by the bed. I suggest a collection of George Will columns.

Sixth, keep the voice mail on to screen all calls.

Seventh, keep a note pad by your bed. That way you can scribble down thoughts that come during the night, such as, "Hey, this sleep drivel could make a decent column."

Finally, don't think of it as sleeping half the day away. Think of it as not having to eat breakfast and getting two lunches instead.

Warnings: Kids, don't try this at home without first explaining your plans to trained professionals, namely, your parents.

Parents, don't be surprised if your kids try to wake you up early. Tell them the house is now a library and they must remain silent. If you are lucky, this will cause them to go back to sleep.

Hilarious, sbutki. Unfortunately, the pressure to earn a living means that I have to drag myself out of bed by 10am. My life will be perfect the day I can sleep until noon every day. Past noon? Well, that's just downright sinful.

Yay, sleep! That's where I'm a viking! My years of having my days and nights mixed up have resulted in me sleeping until 4 p.m. on weekends (on a pretty regular basis, sadly). I feel like a sloth when people are ashamed by the fact they sleep past noon! It's a wonderful thing, people! Embrace the sloth!

Side note: absolute favorite quote:

Don't think of it as sleeping half the day away. Think of it as not having to eat breakfast and getting two lunches instead.

I firmly believe that if it's still dark, it doesn't qualify as "today" and therefore I don't have to get up.

Black-out curtains can help delay the arrival of "today."

You're welcome. I'm glad you guys liked it.
I'll never forget when I delivered that original lecture. We were told we had to teach something - at that point I would sleep until well past noon on the weekends, waking when I'd hear my parents screaming to come do the chores.
While others would stand at the lectern I delivered my speech from a couch and finished it by going
to sleep.
When the teacher told me to move off the stage so someone else can speak, I said, nah, man, I'm good - I'll just stay up here and rest my eyes.
He was not amused.

I'm now considering a sequel as I've taken a job that will require me to be awake from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. 3 days a week so the next piece will be something like How To Stay Awake Until Noon.

I wrote this there:

... you realize you need to update your piece about being to sleep past noon because the one thing right now keeping me from sleeping until noon is feeling the need, the addiction, the pull, the twitching fingers, to check newsvine... and THEN go back to bed, albiet sometimes with laptop in hand...

.... rather than going back to get that badly needed sleep (since you got to sleep about 2 a.m.) you spend an hour fruitlessly searching for said item via vine stalk, got distracted by 20 other interesting stories by others you wanted to go back to add commnets on.. well, you get the idea.

... you still can't find the story and it's driving you mad. (It was called something like "How to sleep past noon" and was one of my first zany pieces here

Hmm, I hadn't noticed this piece before, but here's my solution (seeing as it's currently 12:30pm and I just rolled out of bed):

First, be me.
Second, get to the weekend.

That's all there is to it.

I happen to be a certified sleepologist, having logged countless hours in various sleep disciplines such as polyphasic sleep, biphasic sleep (honors) and advanced napping.

If you're doing it correctly, steps 5 through 7 become unecessary and irrelevant. I have found the major hinderance to my continued research to be parents, who wake you up making you do things with your life.

Good thing I am not a quitter.

Blessed is the person who is too busy to worry in the daytime and too sleepy to worry at night. - Unknown

I bid you good day sir.

Newsvine kept me awake all of Sunday Night. I did start "dozing off" about 2am, thought I was really tired, went to bed, and guess what? That's right. I couldn't sleep!!!!!

Which is the reason why I'm here sitting at my desk at ten past six on Monday Morning, still wide awake and fresh as the proverbial Daisy.

Only trouble is I'm running out of tobacco, and the bloody shops don't open for another three hours!!!

had a job last summer where I'd work 10 p.m to a.m. awake shift and it really threw things off so i was ok when the job ended up not lasting.

I revived this piece as part of this week's Writing Down the Bones exercise on napping.

Here is what I wrote there regarding this piece and discussion....

From the exercise

We all have strengths and weaknesses. Me - I can come up with weird ideas and follow them through to some weird conclusion. Other strengths: empathy

Weakness: terrible at lying and awful at taking naps

The problem, and a therapist agreed with me on this before concluding that I'd "graduated" from therapy, is that I think too much. I overthink. It's one of the reasons I'm not embarrassed to admit my addictions to tetris and online backgammon as they are games which, while still requiring some thought, allow me to turn off the part of the brain that is worrying about what I may do wrong in the next few days or what I may have, unknowingly, done wrong in the prior few days...

I linked above to my piece about napping until noon but the reality is I can't sleep until noon these days unless I have some meds to help me do so. In high school, when I wrote that piece, I wasn't yet worrying about the problems of the world and finding the ills of the world (be it hunger or war or bigotry) something I felt I must personally deal with.

This led to my first visit with a therapist, a foreshadowing of sorts to my return to some therapy after my dad died 15 years or so later. But I digress.

When I see people napping, often with a smile on their face, I get jealous. I wish I could just turn off my mind and rest. Instead if I close my eyes my mind starts shouting out things I could or should be doing or chooses that moment to suggest a story idea (write from the point of view of mall santas is the one that came last nite) or whatever and so when I wake up I'm not sure I ever actually fall asleep.

Let me end with two anecdotes: I remember trying to control my dreams when I was young. I was not crazy about some recent dreams so I decided I'd have some disney dreams (I grew up not far from Disneyland) and so I'd tell myself "dream about mickey, dream about minnie" and while I'd indeed have some story occur I was never sure if I was awake forcing myself to dream on those topics or asleep...

Years later my younger niece, then about 2 or 3, announced that she was going to dream about me that night because she liked me but that normally lately she'd been alternating between dreaming one night of Rudolph and the next of Frosty. Though adopted I immediately thought of my prior dreaming  experiments and how surely this can't be a coincidence.

Have any of you ever tried to control your dreams?

3:23-3:33

    Hear hear, Scott!

In my younger days (before the wife) I could sleep until 5-6pm without any trouble. I slept 36 one summer day, without drugs or sleep dep. The good ol' days.

    Keys to sleeping in:

    cold room
    thick blankets
soft music (Pure Moods, Delerium, Marilyn Manson)
    blocked sunlight
a desire to drown the world out for just a while longer

    And weed never hurt anybody

It's been so long since I did "the deed" i forgot how it works.. something to do with birds and bees, right?

you know when i was a kid i was convinced the belly button had to play a key role - otherwise why was it there?

Really? Birds, bees? No, they told me that doing the deed meant you were sent for and specially-made!

Then my sister looked at the tag on my shirt and said to me: "You came from Singapore." *lol*

The deed was awesome! I would do that any given time! The kid is awesome! I like making those! I also love sleep! Sleep is awesome!

Ok, so how old is the kid? I'm trying to determine when s/he'll stop being awesome and turn into "you know, that small person that confuses me with the local bank?"

Just kidding--the kid will always be awesome--regardless of whether or not you do turn into the local bank... :D

I am pro-sleep. If I ever run for office that will be my slate: pro-sleep, pro-green tea, pro-chocolate, pro-sweet tea.

Nobody will be allowed to conduct business before noon, thus encouraging sleeping in.

Where do I sign up? Will there be penalties enforced for tardiness, I'm just not sure if I can be productive before 2pm ;)

    Keys to sleeping in:

    cold room
    thick blankets
soft music (Pure Moods, Delerium, Marilyn Manson)
    blocked sunlight
a desire to drown the world out for just a while longer

    And weed never hurt anybody

It's like you stole my list right outta my brain! I wanted to add Merl Saunders, Morphine & Portishead to your above list :)

lately i've become a fan of white noise often in the form of a fan. Granted it's admittedly odd to have a fan on when it's snowing outside but if it helps me sleep...

I totally understand the fan. I keep the fan on all year round in my bedroom, but I still play music. I don't need the fan as much as I need the other factors though. It's really just a bonus for me when the husband travels :)

There's nothing like that fresh breeze blowing over your legs & feet while the rest of you is huddled under the thick covers all toasty. Mmmmm reminds me of college :) Our dorm rooms had old radiator heat, so you had to have fans on in the winter or you'd suffocate. We had loft beds & would just roast; but boy were those fans a treat! Also helped with the loud suite-mates. If you played any kind of good music, they'd barge in & want to start partying ;) Ah college

My husband is a fan of the fan noise--and I hate it. He's given it up for me--and the fact that it's so filthy, he refuses to breathe the air that would be blown out of the thing.

So, in a way, his laziness benefits me. But, I like your platform Scoop. I say we vote you in...

PS. Will there be napping allowed during work time? I like to take 20 minute power-naps.

Depends who they are about. I mean if you just dreamed sleeping with your coworker and she's married to your boss then you have the right to not share that one. How's that? Dream veto power.

Finally, don't think of it as sleeping half the day away. Think of it as not having to eat breakfast and getting two lunches instead.

Scott, you're officially my new hero :-)

      not over it

How do you get anything done? I have never slept past 9:00 and that was after staying up playing poker till 4:00 am.

Normally I am up and doing something by 6:30 am, especially on Sunday, my only day off. Too much to do to stay in bed all day.
